The Pre-Advanced Placement (Pre-AP) courses at LHSS are a significant opportunity to help students acquire the knowledge, concepts, and skills needed to engage in a higher level of learning. Pre-AP extends the current curriculum and enriches specific learning outcomes. Enrolling in Pre-AP courses prepares students for success in the senior Advanced Placement (AP) courses. Evaluation is based on the regular academic/university level Ontario curriculum.
Based on the recommendations from the review of the AP program during the 2019/2020 academic year and due to the Ministry of Education’s directive to reorient Grade 9 programming for September 2021, Pre-AP commences in Grade 10 (select in Grade 9). This will allow teachers, as subject specialists, to better support the student’s application and their opportunity for success.
To participate in our pre-AP and Advanced Placement program, students can select these options directly in MyWay when choosing their courses. The math department will then review all Pre-AP/AP class lists to establish that prerequisite conditions have been met including, but not limited to: academic history, previous Pre-AP/AP courses, required knowledge and teacher recommendations. Those not meeting the prerequisites will be placed in the appropriate academic or university-level course. A reminder that Pre-AP/Advanced Placement courses are intended for students who are notably passionate in those particular subject areas and seek further challenges beyond the traditional academic or university-level curriculum. Students considering these courses should demonstrate consistent academic strength in these subject areas, as the pace of these courses and depth of course work is intended to be demanding.
If you wish to enroll in our Pre-AP/Advanced Placement courses, please select from the following course codes (now available in MyWay) ending in "W" instead of "I".
MPM 2DW

MTH 1WI
MCR 3UW (semester 1)
MHF 4UW (semester 2)
(2 credit package - students MUST select both)
Prerequisite:
MPM2DI and transition course or MPM 2DW
MCV 4UW

It is strongly recommended that students intending on taking pre-AP mathematics courses write the Pascal/Cayley/Fermat mathematics contests offered at LHSS. The Mathematics department also offers the Canadian Intermediate/Senior Mathematics Contests, the Canadian Computing Competition, and the Fryer/Galois/Hypatia/Euclid mathematics contests. Students can register for math contests through School-Day.
For the pre-AP selection process, preference will be given to students who have written at least one of the mathematics contests offered at LHSS – decisions are based on marks in previous mathematics courses as well as contest results.
The Calculus Advanced Placement (AP) course is available in conjunction with the Ontario curriculum Calculus/Vectors course. Students will need to complete the Ontario curriculum and AP course work before attempting the AP exam. AP exams are written in May. Based on their performance on rigorous AP examinations, students can earn credits for many universities and colleges in Canada and the USA.
