Q: How do I address report cards with transgender students.
A: If you feel uncomfortable using my deadname, you can use "you" instead of name and/or pronouns. Write your comments in a generalized format.
Anonymous: If you have personal questions to that student, like regarding calling home, ask the student. If it's a broad question, like about terminology, use this resource (the Google Site) or do some Googling.
If you have a student that has expressed their pronouns to you personally, this would be a great opportunity to put this information on your supply notes. Make sure that this is somewhere easily accessible / bolded / highlighted for your supply to access at the beginning of class for when the supply takes the attendance at the beginning of the lesson.
A: They should be discussed, but there is a line that should not be crossed. That line is:
harmful intent
getting no where
is the question genuine, or is it to express an opinion over and over again
A: Shut the conversation down. Use the DIRECT Tool from the WRDSB.
if it is getting no where - stop the conversation and sum every point up and clarify what people are saying for validation, but move on from the topic.
if it harmful intent - explain why this is harmful (ex. This is harmful because... and if you don't know personally, revisit this the next day)
follow-up with resources on the Google Classroom / briefly discuss this at the beginning of next class
privately ensure that students who were personally affected by topics discussed in class have access to resources and guidance (or a safe space to decompress)
