Happy Happy Friday!

This week in the Hive, we had our first full week of learning! We are getting better at understanding classroom expectations, and every day I have seen great improvements. This week, we took a tour around the most important places in the school (including the kitchen, the gym, the main office, and more) and talked about the people who work in each of those areas. The students all love Miss Rhonda, our incredible kitchen staff who helps make our lunches and snacks each day! We also discussed what some of the more unfamiliar materials in our classroom are called - This included magnifying glasses, tweezers, construction signs, scooters, and much more! We love exploring the materials in our classroom!

For literacy, we read books like Love is a Family to discuss how our families look and comparing them to others, Wemberly Worried to think about ways we can make ourselves feel better when we are anxious or nervous, and Jabari Jumps to see how we can make ourselves feel brave when facing challenges! On Thursday, the rain prevented us from going outside, but we spent our time learning more dances on the ukulele! The students really love The Goldfish Song and We Are the Dinosaurs, both by Laurie Berkner! I highly recommend looking up these songs and playing them with your students!

And of course, all week we practiced, practiced, PRACTICED all of our expectations. I have been so happy to see these students Being Safe, Being Responsible, and Being Respectful! Thank you so much for helping us reinforce these expectations at home as well!

Next Week in The Hive...

Next week in our classroom, we will be discussing the focus question, "What should we do if we feel sad or scared at school?" We will talk about specific ways that students can use materials or spaces in the classroom to soothe themselves if they are upset or angry, and different breathing/calming techniques that the students can utilize at any time in their lives. We will also be making some charts and talking about how we have felt at school so far - We may even make a graph to see what feelings have been the most common so far! We will be reading books like The Kissing Hand (a classroom favorite!!) and rereading Wemberly Worried with a different focus. We will also be introducing scissors next week in the Art Area, so if you have scissors at home, it will be a great time to practice!

WE ARE LOOKING FOR AUTHENTIC MATERIALS FOR OUR CLASSROOM! If you end up with empty boxes or containers of snacks, treats, hair care, or anything else that your students are familiar with, we want them in our classroom! We are hoping to find things that we know our students use and love at home. Here are a few ideas of what we are searching for:

-Empty favorite cereal boxes -Empty shampoo containers -Pet treat/food boxes
-Junk mail with names (cross out addresses) -Business cards -Familiar restaurant menus
-Travel brochures -Local business pamphlets/magazines -Photos of favorite places/family

We will be bringing in the things that we use at home, but we want to include things from your home too! Please let us know if you have anything to donate - It isn't junk when we can learn from it! 😁

Upcoming Important Dates

September 22nd - Pancake Fundraiser!
The flyer came home yesterday! The PTO is hosting its first fundraiser for the year on September 22nd - Come after school from 5:30-7pm to purchase and enjoy some pancakes, and spend time with friends and family! All family members are invited!

Friday, October 2nd - First Family Fun Friday!
This school year, Ms. Liz and I will be organizing some Family Fun events on select Fridays! These are optional events and will be meet up events, meaning you are invited to join us at a location other than school. We have not chosen a location just yet for our first event, but it will be in the afternoon on October 2nd! If you have any recommendations of fun events, we would love to hear them as well!
