Finally Outside!
We Love the Outdoors!
Riding Fast!
We Love Trains!
This week in the Grotto, we discussed the focus question, "Where do people exercise? What types of exercise do they do there?" We looked at many different pictures of exercise equipment, and mimed how we would use them if we were in a gym. We also talked about our muscles, and tried to notice how our muscles felt as we did different exercises (like noticing our arm muscles when trying a push-up). We definitely 'felt the burn' a few times this week working out our bodies! It was a lot of fun to practice our balance, flexibility, and strength throughout the week.
We read a LOT this week, as we were trying to finish our Book Safari for the month! The picture of our completed safari is below. We read stories as a whole class, read with our book buddies, and picked our favorites throughout the month. The students really enjoyed listening to song versions of classic Dr. Seuss books, revisiting the Pigeon and Elephant and Piggie books, and much more! I highly encourage you to keep on reading at home, and maybe even try to make your own Book Safari board!
In our Small Groups, we practiced using safe search websites to research topics that the students were interested in, practiced more tallying on whiteboards, and played a few different games during large group - Doggie, Doggie, Where's Your Bone? was a fun, simple guessing game that filled the room with giggles, and Alphabet Hold Up was a fun challenge for the kids to listen carefully for the right letter!
Next week is Spring Break! The students have earned it, with how hard they have been working the last few weeks. Enjoy your break, and we look forward to continuing our learning on April 6th!

Next week in the Grotto, it will be Spring Break! Enjoy your time with your students and have a nice break!
When we return on April 6th, we will begin with the focus question, "What types of equipment do people use to exercise?" We will be exploring different work out materials throughout the week, including yoga mats, hand weights, helmets/safety pads, and more. We will be seeing how those materials are used, how they affect our bodies, and how we can continue to make our bodies stronger by staying active. We will have a visitor come in to talk to us about yoga, play a lot of different movement games, and of course, have fun while we learn! We will read stories such as Soccer Counts/El futbol cuenta! to practice counting and learn a bit about soccer, as well as Happiest Tree: A Yoga Story.
In our Small Groups, we will be working on math equations by playing with plates and utensils, play Shape Bingo, observe insect life outside, and find rhyming words out of a tub. As always, we will continue practicing our names, and writing and reading all throughout the day! We are working on kindergarten readiness, and the more reading and writing students participate in, the more prepared they will be!
Please take a look below to see the Parent Letter about Exercise - If you have any extra materials lying around, we would love to check them out! As always, they will be taken care of! Thank you for your participation!
Dear families,
Young children are in nearly constant motion. Moving makes children feel capable and confident, releases tension, and builds strong bodies and minds. Children's love of movement will make a study of exercise very exciting. We will try many types of exercise, watch other people exercise, explore the places that people exercise, and discover what equipment they use.
If you can, we would love your help to get our study going. We will need many different objects and pictures related to exercise. Below is a list of suggested items, but you may also send others not on the list that you think might add to our exploration. Please label all items with your name so we can return them to you at the end of the study. We promise to take good care of them!
As we study exercise, we will learn concepts and skills in physical development, language and literacy, math, science, social studies, the arts, and technology. We will also develop thinking skills as we observe, investigate, ask questions, solve problems, make predictions, and test our ideas.
Talk with your child about exercise and do a few exercises with your child each day.
Point out when you notice people in your community exercising. Help your child keep a daily exercise chart. Create a list with your child of your family's favorite exercises. As you read books with your child, notice and talk about the character's physical movements.
At the end of our study, we will hold a special event to show you what we have learned!
Thank you for playing an important role in our learning!
