-Have conversations about what you are doing together and what you notice. Offer interesting observations that invite your children to respond
-Act out your child's favorite story
-Have your child make up a different ending to a story
-Teach your child songs that you sang growing up
After school ideas...
-Write cards, grocery lists, letters, and notes
-Create a menu together and add it to a play area
-Create independent journals where children can write or draw their everyday experiences
-Take dictation of a child's picture and have them write the letters that they know
-Have children make a sign and write the words

Print referencing can happen any time you read anything!
-When cooking or at a restaurant, look at recipes or menus
-When in a car or taking a walk, read street signs
-At home, read junk mail or food boxes
After school ideas...
-Ask open-ended questions during reading time (What do you think would happen if...? How do you think they did...?)
-Use voices, different tones, and model speaking aloud
-Point at words while you read or have students point
-Allow students to choose new books when possible
-Teach the meaning of unfamiliar words, or show how you find the answer (Google it together!)
