World Parks Week was developed out of World Parks Day, which was held in the Fall. In 2017 World Urban Parks developed the event into a Week and moved it to April/May. This way, we as a World Park community can celebrate the week in our parks no matter what part or hemisphere of the world we call home.

This year’s event was the eighth World Parks Day, an event held annually on the third Saturday in September to celebrate the many benefits parks provide to communities. Previously organised by Parks for Life, this was the first World Parks Day to be organised by World Urban Parks since the organisation’s establishment earlier this year.

In Ireland, historian, author and artist Pat Liddy led a tour of the history of Dublin’s parks, exploring the history of Fairview Park, Bram Stoker Park and the lost paradise of the Marino Demesne, completing the journey in the Marino Casino. Phoenix Park in Dublin also held a honey festival and bird watching events.

Silesia Park (Park Śląski) in Poland held many great events to mark the occasion, including concerts, a funfair, the opening of a new ornithological walk, organics workshops and outdoor games. These events made the news in nearby city Katowice.

World Parks Day was celebrated on Saturday 20 September, with many events taking place across the globe to celebrate the importance of parks and green spaces and the tremendous value they offer.

The 2014 event held particular importance in Australasia as part of the build-up to the ten yearly World Parks Congress in Sydney this November. In addition to their regular offering of free entry to several National Parks, several Australian parks held tours, concerts, workshops and competitions.

The city of Johannesburg in South Africa marked the day by opening their new 16-million Rand inner-city Metro Park. The much-anticipated park was officially opened by Johannesburg Executive Mayor Mpho Parks Tau, and celebrations followed.

The new park has been described as a “green lung”, and includes modern features such as outdoor gym equipment with a dedicated instructor, playgrounds, an amphitheatre and the area’s first mobile Wi-Fi library.
