Council Members

Meet the women behind the council! We represent the Women's Axe Council from all across North America, and hope to expand our reach in the future. Just like you, we are mothers, wives, sisters, daughters, and most importantly: axe throwers.

Leslie Wellman

Leslie Wellman, a 42-year-old Michigan native, currently resides in Battle Creek, MI. Leslie was first introduced to axe throwing when her husband, Dustin, and his friends started a local, fun axe throwing league in 2018. To say it was love at first throw is putting it lightly. In 2020, Leslie attended her first major tournament, The Arnold, in Dublin, Ohio as a spectator but was given a spot in the tournament after a fellow league member couldn’t attend. As of 2022, Leslie and her husband, also know as “The Wellman’s” drive all over the US going to every major tournament. Leslie states, “the axe throwing community is the most inclusive, supportive, and exciting part of the sport. I can’t imagine my life without the sport and the people I’ve met.” In her free time, Leslie creates wood burned art, wood and leather jewelry and attempts to help her husband with his thriving axe maker business. Stop by and see Leslie at your next tournament!

Katelyn Garrow

Katelyn Garrow aka “Lil’ Foot” to her friends, is a 28-year-old mental health and surgery nurse residing in Ontario, Canada with a huge love of axe throwing. Katelyn states, “I wish I had a "more exciting" story for how I began my axe throwing career, but simply put... I was finishing nursing school, and needed a part time job, my local throwing venue was hiring coaches, and I applied. I then became the exclusive coach for our weekly league and took that opportunity to participate in the sport myself, the rest is history.” She is one of the original founders of the ever-growing charity, Throwing it Forward (TIF), alongside Tristan Ledbury, Mike Morton and Alison Fawthrop. Through her work with TIF, Katelyn has developed and led initiatives with the goal to support throwers in need with a focus on youth and women in the sport. In her free time, Katelyn is an active ally in the anti-racism movement (Idle No More, BLM, and Truth & Reconciliation Commission) and as an Afro-Indigenous woman, advocates for her heritage and community. Katelyn has always had the goal of supporting and advocating women in the axe throwing community. Bird states, “And what I love best about this sport is that it doesn’t matter what age, gender identity, upbringing, belief system, whether you have a disability, illness and it certainly doesn’t matter who you know..nothing else matters when it comes to the board and the blade and game except you and that effort you’ve been putting in.” In her free time, she loves to play video and strategy games, travel, and photography. She and Kyle have a hairless cat named Edison, 2 horses – Cannon & Ice, and her service dog/life companion Clam who is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Reach out and say hi to Bird!

Heather Teichgraeber, a native of Houston, TX, who currently resides in Waco, TX, is a veterinarian and practices mixed animal medicine. She loves Golden Retrievers and enjoys spending time with her two Goldens, Milo and Scout. She started axe throwing in 2021 after a coworker recommended it to release the frustrations of the work day. After a couple of “therapy sessions”, she decided to join league and she was hooked. After her first axe throwing league, she started competing and she hasn’t stop since. Out of all the disciplines, her favorite discipline by far is Big Axe.  Heather has also gained a passion for judging and often judges in many of the tournaments she attends. She has judged at WATC in 2021 and 2022. Heather is a big advocate for women in the sport and is constantly encouraging women to advance.  In 2023, she organized Waco Axe Company’s first Women’s Tournament, Belle of the Brazos, and it was a huge success.  She plans to make it an annual tournament. Heather was eager to join the Women’s Axe Council and gladly accepted a seat on the council to help continue to promote and encourage women to advance in the sport.
