Welcome to South High School!

We are thrilled to welcome you to your freshman year of high school, or as a new student to South High School, and anticipate an awesome year ahead! High School is filled with new experiences, new friends, advanced curriculum and high expectations.  We cannot wait to enter the new building and start new traditions where everyone has no limits on what they can achieve.   We look forward to a great year where we, as a community, can learn and grow together as you prepare for college and career opportunities.  As you prepare for the beginning of the school year we have provided a list of commonly asked questions and answers.

When is the first day of school?

School starts on Monday, August 26th.

What time does school start and end?

We start the day promptly at 7:10am and our academic day ends at 1:43pm. Clubs and after school activities generally start at 2:00pm.

When will I get my class schedule?

Freshman schedules are mailed to your house in August.

You can access your schedule sooner via the student portal.  You will be receiving a letter in the mail, an email on information on social media with instruction on how to access your student portal in WooEdu, the new WPS student information system the week of August 8th.

How do I set up my student portal?

You will be receiving a letter in the mail, an email on information on social media with instruction on how to access your student portal in WooEdu, the new WPS student information system the week of August 8th.

How Do I learn about my BUS Stop, Route and number?

Please make sure that students arrive at their bus stops at least 10 minutes before the listed times in the morning.

I need a Chromebook- What do I do?

Chromebooks will be distributed to students during the first few weeks of school.

What if I need to change My schedule?

If you need to make a change to your schedule we will do what we can to accommodate your request.  However, please know that many classes are full or only offered one or two periods and may not be available or work with your schedule.  You must provide a legitimate reason for requesting a schedule change.  Schedules will not be changed after October 1st, 2021, the fifth week of school.

You have several options when requesting a schedule change:

How will I find my classes on my first day of school?

9th grade teachers will give tours of the building the first few days of school and teachers will be in the hallway to direct all students to their classes.

If you start after the first day of school, there will be a student ambassador to show you around the building.

What about South's Tardy Policy?

A student who is not in his/her/their assigned seat at the start of homeroom or class is considered  tardy. Each assistant principal will meet with the parent/guardian and school’s faculty to develop and institute an intervention plan for students who reach 10 tardies and/or dismissals.

Students will be marked absent from school if they come to school after or leave before half of the academic day and cannot participate in school activities (e.g., sports, dances, clubs) that day.

What can I expect on the first day of school?

One the first day of school you will be in an extended period 1 to review the important policies and procedures of South High. During this extended period, you will get your locker and have time to ask your teacher any questions about your schedule.

Do I pay for School breakfast and / or lunch?

Breakfast and lunch are served at South High School free of charge, you do not have to pay.  You must provide your student ID number in order to obtain a breakfast and a lunch.  All students are welcome to enter the cafeteria between 6:45-7:10 am to eat a school provided breakfast, or other treat.  The bell rings at 7:10 am for all students to make their way to Homeroom and Period 1.

When do we get our grades?

Each quarter lasts 10 weeks.  Interim grading period ends five weeks after the quarter begins.  Interim report cards will be mailed to the student's home address at the end of week 6 of each quarter.  Report card will be mailed home one week after the quarter ends.  Students and parents  can access interim and report cards in their student/parent portals.   School administrators will text or email parents if their child failed one or more classes at the interim and quarterly reporting period.  Parents are encouraged to set up a Parent-Teacher Conference with their child's guidance counselor to discuss their child's progress at any point during the school year.

South High School does not have a school supply list.  Students should bring a spiral notebook and something to write with to school on the first day; your teachers will let you know what you need for each class.

What extracurricular activities does South offer?

There is something for everyone at South. As soon as school starts we will be providing students with a list of clubs and sports we offer at South High School, check your student email often! Within the first few weeks of school, South High School will host a Club Fair during school hours for students to learn about the clubs gathering information about the club purpose, meeting times, etc...

If you can’t find something you’re interested in, please contact Ms. Papadopoulos (papadopouloso@worcesterschools.net) to ask about starting your own club.

In addition to our clubs, South High offers after school social activities for the whole Colonel’s community (families included!). Please follow our calendar linked here for more information and updates.

Is there any summer Work?

All students should try to complete Summer Reading. Rather that summer reading being 10% of your first quarter English grade, most English teachers will give you extra credit for completing Summer Reading and writing a report on the book.

Students enrolled in Advanced Placement classes have summer work that must be completed and is almost always part of their 1st quarter grade.  South High School's AP Summer Work.

What is South’s attendance policy?

Attendance is required to earn credit for a class. Students are expected to attend all classes on their schedules. For the 20121-2022 school year, high school students will not receive credit if they have more than 14  unexcused class absences per one-credit course and/or 7 unexcused class absences for courses less than one credit.

If you exceed 14 unexcused absences, you may be able to complete our Attendance Buyback Program to earn that credit back. To be eligible for the Attendance Buyback Program, students must have passed a course with a 65 and must have between 15 and 22 absences. Students will not be able to change their passing grade for their course.

Absent students cannot participate in school activities (e.g., sports, dances, clubs) that day.
