Worcester State University offers the Initial Licensure Program in Middle School Education. Certain grade levels covered by licensure differ based on subject areas. For more information about licensure areas, please see an academic advisor from the Education Department. The Massachusetts Test for Educator Licensure (MTEL) is embedded in the program at various stages and must be passed for completion of the program and licensure.
Fieldwork accompanies most education courses and is a necessary component of the program. Student pre-practicum experiences include a wide variety of field settings. Students attend different and varied schools in urban, rural, and suburban settings. They also vary their placements and grade levels in different school buildings within districts to insure a well rounded experience.

Students can use 500 level credits BOTH towards their undergraduate degree AND when they graduate the credits will also be posted as graduate credits on a graduate transcript.
Students must be admitted to the 4+ Middle Education Initial Licensure Program before they can enroll in 500 level courses. Application to the 4+ Middle School Education Initial Licensure Program requires passing scores on Communication and Literacy MTEL, Subject Area MTEL, and completion of the graduate school application. The 4+ Middle School Education Initial License Program is open to students with majors in: Math, Spanish, Environmental/Earth Science, English, and History.
Students must be admitted to the 4+ Initial License and M.Ed. Program in Middle School Education. 4+ Programs are programs that allow undergraduate students to enroll in some graduate level coursework while paying undergraduate tuition. Students can use 500 level credits BOTH towards their undergraduate degree AND towards their Master's in Education in Middle School degree. The 4+ Middle School Education Initial License and M.Ed. Program is open to applications from students with majors in subject areas where Worcester State University offers graduate level coursework including: Math, Spanish, English, History. Students getting licensed in Middle School General Science can also apply and take graduate level Biology/Bio tech classes. Students take all of the 4+Initial License courses, earn their initial license, and complete the following additional courses for the M.Ed. in Middle School Education degree. Students in this program are eligible to apply for graduate assistantships, which cover tuition and fees.

This minor does not lead to initial license in education. Requirements include a total of 18 credits with 3 in Introduction, 3 in Learning and Development, 3 in Curriculum, 3 in Diversity, and 6 in Electives. See website for specific courses that qualify for each category.
