Each week at Cornerstone, everyone joins in a common read aloud and focuses on a vocabulary word form the story. Teachers use a systematic process for teaching this, and many other words from their own read alouds, throughout the week. Students are then encouraged to show their understanding of the new word by writing and/or illustrating a sentence using the word correctly.
A winner, or winners, are chosen based on how well the word is used, the originality of the sentence and, at times so many amazing responses are given that we also look at the grammar pieces as well (correct capitalization, punctuation, spacing, spelling, etc).
Winners recieve a new book of their choice as well as a coupon for a free Jimmy John's sub from the downtown Wooster Jimmy John's location. Jimmy John's has very generously and kindly sponsored this initiative for 6 years now.
We have had a great turn out each week with this contest. Our hope is to continue this piece as long as distant learning is taking place. Research has consistently shown that increasing a child's vocabulary not only increases reading comprehension but overall academic achievement. This begins orally with lots of rich conversation and meaningful and engaging read alouds, both of which we hope you will be able to foster at home with your children.
