While we definitely want students to use this as one of their strategies, sounding out words alone won't work for many of the words that your child may experience difficulty with while reading. Decoding words and using the phonics knowledge they have is very important but only part of the puzzle. The English language is very complex and has so many rules and exceptions to the rules, that unless a child has mastery of all of them, they will most likely run into trouble if they are relying only on phonics and "sounding out" words.

It is important to remember that reading is not just saying words on a page. Reading needs to make sense, sound right and look right. When your child comes to a tricky word when reading, try prompting them to use the strategies below. These strategies have been taught throughout the year and expand as readers grow through each grade level.
