IB Literature - Course Requirements

Ever wonder why we study the works that we do? The selection of works below reflect a balance between literary form, period and place, and endeavor to include a variety of forms the human and artistic experience can take. This balance is mandated by IBO.

Works of Study:

IB requires a minimum of three works for each area of exploration (Readers, Writers, & Texts; Time and Space; Intertextuality). Works must be selected to cover the four literary forms (Drama, Poetry, Novel, Short Story), three periods and four countries or regions as defined on the Prescribed Reading List in at least two continents. Other requirements for the 13 works of study include:

4 works must be written in translation by authors on the Prescribed reading list (√)

5 works must be originally written in the language studied, by authors on the Prescribed reading list (*)

4 works may be freely chosen (+)

Authors:

One same author cannot be studied twice within a language A: literature course. Additionally, a language A: literature candidate may not study:

An author that he or she may already be studying as part of a language B course.

A language A: literature candidate may write his or her extended essay on an author studied as part of the course provided he or she chooses a different work by that author.
