"ROAD TRIP STOPS" TRAINING:
Use the following scenarios to practice calculating percent change in the price of items often purchased along the way of a road trip. You will be utilizing the skills learned in this training to write one of your blog posts. Record the work on your recording sheet.
*Show your solutions to either Mrs. Frantz, Mr. Figley, Mrs. Robinson, Mr. Ladrach or Mrs. Hilty (whoever's room you are working in) before moving on to the INVESTIGATION.
INVESTIGATION:
Travel costs are often a consideration when travelers decide where to go on a road trip, and gasoline is the main expense of a road trip. Today, your group will investigate whether changes in gas prices appear to have affected the number of visitors to your national park.
1. Park Attendance Record the year and the number of visitors to your national park when attendance was at its highest and lowest since 2000 on your recording sheet. To find data on park attendance, search [your national park] on this site .Calculate the percent change in the number of visitors to the park between the years of highest and lowest attendance.
2. Gas Prices Using this site, record the average gas price for the corresponding years in the table on your recording sheet. Calculate the percent change in the gas prices for those years.
Compare the percent change in park attendance and the percent change in gas prices.
Determine if a change in gas prices seems to have had an effect on the number of visitors to the park. Be sure to support your conclusion with mathematical reasoning.
Consider what other factors could have affected park attendance.
