The Woodford County HS Symphonic Band is the heart of the Woodford County Band program. This ensemble meets every other day for 84 minutes and performs regularly throughout the year. The Symphonic Band is made up of wind instrumentalists in grades 9-12. The Symphonic Band is under the direction of Mr. Collins
Percussion Studies is for every high school percussionist at WCHS. Students in grades 9-12 explore the world of percussion including keyboards, snare drum, timpani, drum set, auxiliary percussion, and much more. Students in Percussion Studies perform regularly as part of the Symphonic Band and Jazz Band, as well as their own entity. Percussion Studies is under the instruction of Mrs. Collins
One of the most visible components of the band program, the WCHS Marching Band starts their season in the summer and rehearses and competes throughout the fall on the state, regional, and national level. The WCHS Marching Band is directed by Mr. & Mrs. Collins, Isaiah Cloud, and other specialized instructors. The WCHS Marching Band is an eleven time Kentucky State semifinalist, a six time Mid-States Band Association Class AAA finalist, and a 2021 Bands of America Regional Finalist.
The Jazz Band meets during the school day and studies the performance of the blues, swing, rock, funk, and latin genres, as well as the study of improvisation. The Jazz Band gives a spring concert, performs regularly throughout the year in the Versailles community, and is consistently recognized as a distinguished ensemble at the KMEA State Jazz Assessment event.
All wind and percussion students make up the WCHS Pep Band, which supports our football team and both the boys and girls basketball teams at select home and tournament games throughout their seasons.
Chamber music allows students to expand their musical knowledge and sensitivity by playing in smaller groups. Both solo and small ensemble performance opportunities are available to students throughout the year.
Various universities and colleges around Kentucky offer weekend honor band experiences for high school musicians. Spots in these ensembles are done through audition or director recommendation. In recent years, Woodford County has been represented at the UK, UofL, EKU, WKU, MSU, and Asbury University Honor Bands.
Students have the opportunity to audition for both concert and jazz positions in KMEA District 7 Ensembles and KMEA All-State ensembles. Audition music is released in July for the All-State ensembles with auditions in November and December; All-District music is released in November with auditions in January. All-State Band is held in February in conjunction with the KMEA state conference in February, and All-District is held in March. Both events are led by nationally recognized guest conductors. Woodford County regularly has a number of students selected for both All-State and All-District Band.
When marching season ends, the color guard keeps working! The winter guard furthers the dance and equipment training program color guard members receive during the fall season, and allows them to develop and expand these skill sets by learning a competitive show that competes throughout the winter months. The winter guard is under the leadership of Isaiah Cloud.
The Governor's School for the Arts is a highly selective group of the most outstanding young artists in Kentucky that spends approximately three weeks on a college campus learning from some of the best instructors around. Students selected to participate receive four years of free tuition at any Kentucky public university. Woodford County has had nine band students selected for the instrumental music track since 2015.
The Woodford County Band is proud to represent the community at a variety of events including the annual Christmas Parade, the WCHS Homecoming Parade, the Woodford County Hall of Fame induction ceremony, and WCHS Graduation. The WCHS Marching Band was also selected to represent Woodford County in both the 2011 and 2019 Governor's Inaugural Parade.
