The 2024 SDG Gender Index, developed by Equal Measures 2030, is a global benchmark for gender equality. It measures progress across 139 countries and covers 56 issues related to 14 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), providing a comprehensive snapshot of where the world stands on achieving gender equality by 2030. The index highlights the multidimensional nature of gender equality and tracks the status of 96% of the world’s women and girls.

The Philippines, alongside six WGH chapters—Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Mali, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Somalia—is working with regional and national WHO offices on the prevention and response to sexual exploitation, sexual abuse, and sexual harassment (PRSEAH). Kim Sales shed a light on WGH's unique body of policy research on why women leaving the health workforce is a global health risk.
Women in Global Health’s annual count of women-headed member state delegations provides snapshot of gender parity at the 77th session of the World Health Assembly. Overall, the share of women Chief Delegates at WHA77 is 30%. This shows that not even a third of national delegations to WHA this year have been led by women, with the total gender count dropped by 2% compared to 2023.

The session also screened “Neha,” a short documentary showcasing Neha Mankani’s remarkable work taking maternal and newborn health services to communities affected by floods in Pakistan. This powerful film highlights the resilience of midwives and their invaluable contributions to communities in crisis.

The panel moderated by Women in Global Healthat WomenLift Health Global Conference brought together a dynamic group of women leaders representing our network of 57 Country Chapters across 51 countries. Moderated by Dr. Shabnum Sarfaz, WGH Deputy Executive Director, with speakers from across our movement: Dr Choolwe Jacobs from WGH Zambia, Sapna Kedia from WGH India, Prof Rhoda Wanyenze from WGH Uganda, Lanice Williams from WGH US DC Chapter and Maureen Luba from WGH Malawi. They explored the impact of escalating anti-rights backlash against women’s rights; navigated the role of women health workers amidst the evolving health landscape; outlined why women’s leadership is critical to establishing gender-responsive health systems and towards achieving Universal Health Coverage; and highlighted the policy initiatives needed to promote gender equity in health leadership.

Although SEAH of health workers appears to be universal, legal frameworks, cultures, and socio-economic contexts vary widely. The #HealthToo report highlights the critical points that should be addressed in all contexts."

Our delegation participated in the World Health Organization Fair share for health and care report launch--- as 6 million women work underpaid and unpaid in core health systems roles, it is high time to value their role in delivering health for all.
Dr. Roopa Dhatt spoke to The World Bank Vice President Mamta Murthi on our joint priorities of ending gender-based violence and boosting women’s economic opportunities and leadership in health. Dr. Dhatt also met with U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield and U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues Dr. Geeta Rao Gupta and covered the importance of increasing women’s leadership roles in health organizations and decision-making processes.

Around the globe, community health workers (CHWs), the majority of whom are women, deliver essential primary care to over a billion people in low- and middle-income countries. They are trusted in their communities, often the first point of contact for health concerns, and sometimes the only bridge with the health system. Yet they lack salaries, professional skills, supervision, and supplies they need to succeed.
This World Health Worker Week, WGH calls for gender and economic justice for women CHWs. By professionalizing their roles, we empower women, strengthen local health systems, and ultimately improve health outcomes for all. When CHWs have the training, supervision, and resources they deserve, they can reach their full potential, delivering quality care and promoting healthier communities.
The Asia Pacific Forum on Women, Law and Development is inviting women activists and leaders aspiring for political positions to apply for the ""Asia and the Pacific Gender and Politics Training 2024 for Building Transformative Leadership of Grassroots Women Leaders."" The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is the global intergovernmental body dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls. WGH is sending the delegation to the CSW for the very first time and its sixty-eighth session takes place from 11 to 22 March 2024. This year’s priority event focuses on accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by addressing poverty and strengthening institutions and financing with a gender perspective.

This year in 154th WHO Executive Board Meeting, WGH witnessed unprecedented challenges to language on gender equality previously agreed and the admission into official relations with WHO of an sexual and reproductive health and rights-focused civil society organization. Watering down the language on gender equality in health systems will hinder the progress already made towards gender equality and recognizing sexual and reproductive health services as crucial health care for women and girls.
The Population Health Fellowship provides hands-on training in the many facets of population health. Fellows have opportunities to work in academic, health system, community, and government environments, as well as contribute to and support a variety of population health projects. Overall, the fellowship aims to prepare and train individuals for management and leadership roles in population health through their experiences in the program and mentorship by population health leaders.

To equip and empower more leaders in global health, together the Harvard Global Health Institute and the Global Health and Population Department at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health offer a transformational fellowship specifically designed to promote leadership skills in individuals from low- and middle-income countries who will, in turn, mentor future female leaders in global health. Harvard LEAD Fellows will have access to world-class faculty, are provided with senior mentors and the opportunity to build a custom curriculum aligned to their own unique personal growth and leadership plan. WGH Ph participated at a side meeting organized by USAID during the 2024 Prince Mahidol Award Conference. The session, titled 'Advancing the Representation and Rights of Health and Care Workers in Global Health Governance to Strengthen Women’s Economic Security,' featured insights on the experiences of health worker advocates on the experiences of health workers in Asia. WGH Ph emphasized the crucial role of WGH in amplifying women's voices in the health sector, and urged governments to acknowledge and address health worker issues through a gender-focused lens.
For the first time since its creation, WGH has been invited to be at the World Economic Forum. At the conference, Dr. Roopa Dhatt brought WGH's perspective to the discussion, highlighting that gender inequalities deprive health systems of the expertise and perspectives of women delivering healthcare at the frontlines. “WILD Fellowships” are available for the 2024 Women’s Global Leadership Forum. Successful applicants will receive a complimentary ticket to the event (retail value USD 695) and be eligible to participate in 6-months of leadership development activities. The intent of these Fellowships is that they go to people for whom the registration fee is cost prohibitive, and whose employers are not able to cover the cost. Preference will be given to women from aid-recipient countries. Deadline of application: 29 February 2024, 5pm ET
The fund is a rapid response mechanism for human rights defenders, journalists, activists and organisations facing digital threats and attacks. The fund provides up to €10,000 and can be used to cover costs which will directly reduce the risk or impact of a digital attack. The funding covers activities for a maximum of four months.
The SHE WINS Rapid Response Fund is designed to respond to urgent needs in the current women, peace and security (WPS) landscape across 78 countries, including the Philippines. Simple-to-access funds will be directly provided to a diverse range of women-led initiatives to respond to emerging crises, and seize new openings for the advancement of WPS outcomes in fragile and conflict affected contexts.

Aligning with the 2023 UHC Day theme, “Health for All: Time for Action.”, WGH organized a virtual event to refocus on implementing commitments at the country level, with a specific focus on gender-inclusive UHC. The event highlighted the examples of WGH Chapters, effectively advocating for gender-responsive UHC at the country level. Policymakers and health professionals gathered to promote and advocate for the integration of gender perspectives in health policies at both national and community levels.

The Women in Global Health movement deplores the attack on Al Ahli Arab Hospital in the north of the Gaza Strip, which has led to horrific loss of life, with hundreds of fatalities and injuries. This was an operational hospital where health workers were treating patients. It also served as a shelter for internally displaced people.

Congratulations to Dr. Carmencita Padilla for being the 43rd National Scientist! She was honored for her pioneering work as a world-renowned clinical geneticist, on newborn screening in the Philippines, and for the establishment of the Philippine Genome Center. She is the first National Scientist with expertise in the field of medical genetics and the 12th female National Scientist.
AVAC’s Advocacy Fellows Program expands and strengthens the capacity of civil society advocates and organizations to monitor, support and help shape HIV prevention research and rapid rollout of new effective interventions in low- and middle-income countries facing substantial HIV burdens. Fellows will receive comprehensive training, financial backing, and technical assistance to strategize and execute a targeted 18-month project hosted by an organization within their country. Global Action for Trans Equality (GATE) is offering financial assistance of up to USD $3,000.00 to trans, gender diverse, and intersex-led organizations, to cover the fees associated with writing reports for submission to UN human rights mechanisms: universal periodic review, treaty bodies, and special procedures. The 2023 United Arab Emirates Health Foundation Prize was awarded to Dr. Maria Asuncion Silvestre for her work in improving the health of mothers and newborns. Dr. Silvestre is a renowned clinician, a passionate advocate for exclusive breastfeeding and the founder of the nongovernmental organization Kalusugan ng Mag-Ina in the Philippines.
The prize is awarded to one or more persons, institutions or nongovernmental organizations that have made an outstanding contribution to health development. Previous recipients of the award include Hillary Clinton (1998), Médecins sans Frontières (2002), Magdi Yacoub (2003) and Stella Lubayelea Obasanjo (2004).
The GCGH Critical Global Health Initiative seeks to facilitate the creation of an interdisciplinary Early Career Network on Critical Global Health. Women in Global Health joined the Women Deliver Conference held on 17-20 July 2023, the world’s largest gathering dedicated to women’s health and rights. Alongside a 45-member in-person delegation, a further 50 members of the WGH network joined the conference online, representing a total of 28 countries with members of all ages and backgrounds in health. Through events and discussions, WGH seized the opportunity to call for a new social contract for women health workers and drive progress on confronting the global pushback on sexual and reproductive health and rights for women and girls.
This year, WGH recognized the contribution of 12 outstanding women leaders in health with a special focus on African women health workers driving to advance sexual and reproductive health and rights, which are key to guaranteeing the health and bodily autonomy of girls and women and achieving health for all.
In celebration of this year's Pride Month, WGH Philippines hosted an online forum "Building LGBTQIA+ Inclusive Workplaces: Embracing Diversity and Equality" on 26 June 2023. Pura Luka Vega of the Department of Health and Floyd Scott Tiogangco of DAKILA raised awareness about the challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ professionals in the workplace and advocated for inclusive workplace policies and practices that foster equal opportunities.
“Catalyzing Collective Action to Advance Gender Equality,” was hosted by WGH last 23 June 2023 with the objective of reinforcing an understanding of how intersectionality is integral to women’s transformative leadership.

WGH Philippines Co-Convener, Kim Sales, will be part of Women in Global Health's delegation to the 76th World Health Assembly.
This year's delegates will drive messages on the following WGH policy priorities: 1) health workforce, 2) UHC, 3) pandemic gender responsiveness, 4) sexual exploitation, abuse, and harassment in health, and 5) women's political representation and participation at WHA.
On 4 April 2023, the Asia-Pacific Hub of WGH organized a panel for women pioneers in health leadership on the topic of "From Challenges to Triumphs." The panel discussion, moderated by WGH Philippines' Co-Convener Pura Angela Wee Co, highlighted barriers specific to the region as well as some solutions to advance gender parity in leadership in health.
Dr. Roopa Dhatt (WGH Executive Director), Dr. Choolwe Jacobs (WGH Zambia Country Director), and Ms. Lanice Williams (WGH DC Chapter Lead) participated as speakers in a panel on Gender and Power: Equity at Work at the regional meeting of the World Health Summit in Washington DC on April 13th, 2023.
In celebration of International Women's Month, WGH Philippines organized an online event "Career Navigation for Women in Health" last 25 March 2023. Department of Health OIC and Undersecretary Maria Rosario Singh-Vergeire, 101 Health Research-Founder Venus Oliva Cloma-Rosales, and Executive Director of Cebu United Rainbow LGBTIQ+ Sector Magdalena Robinson shared their insights and experiences on the challenges and triumphs of being a female leader in the healthcare space and discussed the value of increasing women's participation in health, particularly in leadership positions.
"The State of Women and Leadership in Global Health" reveals that despite five years of ad hoc commitments, progress on women’s representation in global health governance has remained largely unchanged. The report assessed global data together with deep dives into country case studies from India, Nigeria, and Kenya. Analysis confirms that women are held back from health leadership by cultural gender norms, discrimination and ineffectual policies which don’t redress historic inequalities. The Gender in Pandemic Preparedness and Response working group is a space for members of Pandemic Action Network and WGH to share insights on gender equity within the ongoing pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response processes. The working group will be held every other month.

WGH Philippines' Dr. Pura Angela Wee-Co participated as a speaker on a panel on "Primary Care in an Increasingly Virtual World - Integrating Telemedicine into LMIC Health Systems."
Dr. Katherine Ann Reyes, an outgoing Health Systems Global Board Member for the Western Pacific Region, co-organized and facilitated the virtual and onsite Asia Pacific Regional Meetings for the HSR2022. She also delivered an oral presentation in a satellite session "Accelerating the Development of HPSR Capacity in Western Pacific Region for Health System Strengthening" and presented a virtual poster on "Feasibility Assessment of Social Contracting for HIV services in the Philippines."
This #16days, WGH is calling for an end to all forms of violence and harassment against women in the health sector, including sexual exploitation and abuse. The alarming level of abuse faced by the health workforce is a serious human rights violation for women who make up 70 percent of the overall health workforce and 90 percent of frontline health workers.
The Heroines of Health Awards began in 2017 to amplify the platform for women’s contributions to health, which are immense, but go largely unrecognized. Women deliver health, men lead it. To date, Women in Global Health have recognized 53 inspirational leaders as Heroines of Health from all over the world. Each Heroine has made outstanding contributions to health, and to the campaign for gender equity in global health.
