Day 2 for either Number Sense gr k-2 (June 11) or Number Sense gr 3-5 (June 12) as a UMW class for credit*(1)

Focused on K – 5 problem solving standards
Objectives of this day includes:
Build understanding of the difference between problem types and problem structures.
Use various strategies to solve problems.
Understand the 3-Read Strategy and how to use it to support problem solving.
Strategies to support students solving mult-step problems using all operations.
Participants learn to help students develop and apply conceptual knowledge, foster meaningful classroom discussions, become proficient problem solvers, and become a better consumer of classroom instructional materials.

Using Math Literature Throughout the Year

This session will give you practical ways to incorporate children's literature into your K-8 Math class. Ideas will be shared and participants will be asked to create samples for several of the ideas throughout the session. Come enjoy some children's literature, Math, creativity, and inspiration! Leave with ideas ready to pull out throughout the year.
Objective(s):
Learn about how to use children’s literature to launch activities and/or journal responses to elicit math understanding & critical thinking.
Consider a few concrete activities that can lead to journal responses and critical thinking.
Brainstorm for implementation using suggestions or ideas of your own.
