In 2012, the West Linn-Wilsonville School District made a commitment to move toward a more inclusive school district. This meant revamping our mindsets and our practices. We committed to understanding that disability is a natural part of the human experience; we committed to supporting every student at their neighborhood school; we committed to improving instructional practices for all students; we committed to elevating student voice; and we commited to creating more inclusive cultures.
It has been a long and often messy journey, but we know that being more inclusive helps build belonging of all students and supports our goal of creating learning communities for the greatest thinkers and most thoughtful people for the world.
In 2020, Dr. Jennifer Spencer-Iiams and Dr. Josh Flosi documented our vision and journey toward a more inclusive school dsitrict in the book, Leading for All: How to Create Truly Inclusive and Excellent Schools (Corwin). Funds earned from this book are, in part, funding the Leading for All Scholarship.
This Leading for All Scholarship is a way to acknowledge the incredible work of students to lead their own high schools to become more inclusive. We know that the inclusive work in our schools create community members who are more compassionate, understanding and supportive of all people, including people who experience disabilities.
