Students are expected to grow in their independence in 5th grade. For the first time for most students, they will be switching teachers. All students may be placed in a math class that is not their homeroom. Additionally, homeroom teachers will only be teaching science OR social studies. For example, I will teach science and my entire homeroom will be going to Mr. Duell for social studies.
This means that organization and task management are even MORE important as students are expected to transfer themselves, their supplies, and their assignments into different rooms. We will practice this a lot at the beginning of the year, but students are expected to become independent and responsible for themselves in this way. Please see the Parent Night slides for more details.
At the beginning of the year we will create a Treatment Agreement as a class. It is important to me that students help create our expectations and are involved in cultivating a learning environment where they feel safe and respected.
When students break our Treatment Agreement, they will receive a verbal reminder. If there continues to be an issue they may lose a privilege.
In general, I expect students to be kind, play fair, work hard, and dream big. If we can do those four things we will have a fantastic year!
The most important homework in fifth grade is READING! Students must read at least 20 minutes each night. They may read any book they choose; it could be from our school library, class library, or a book they have at home. We are a community of readers. Reading is a lifelong skill and hobby that extends far beyond the classroom, and I am looking forward to sharing my love for reading with my students.
Students will have some other homework throughout the week. In general, if they spend their class time wisely, they will have minimal work to do at home. Students are responsible for writing their homework assignments in their assignment book. They are also responsible for bringing home any necessary materials to complete the assignments.
Homework that is being collected must be turned in by 7:45 the day it is due. Any homework not turned in by this time is considered late and will be subject to the 5th grade late work penalty (10% off 1 day late, 20% off 2 days late, 50% off after 2 days).
