Welcome to INtervention

The  Intervention Program at West Lafayette Intermediate School  is a general education initiative designed  to support students  who are performing below grade level in math and/or reading. Students attend a workshop style class with a certified teacher multiple times a week for 45 minute sessions.  All instruction is provided in a small group setting with six or fewer students.

Who qualifies for intervention services?

Students qualify for intervention services for one or more of the following reasons:

When will my student receive intervention services?

The intervention group time does not take the place of the reading or math instruction your child receives in their homeroom class but will supplement and enhance that instruction. They do not miss reading/language arts, math, lunch, recess, or specials to receive intervention services. Each math intervention class will meet two times a week for 45 minute sessions. Reading intervention classes will also meet two times a week for 45 minute sessions.

Students attend intervention during AEI, Social Studies or Science.  Students are not responsible for making up the classwork or homework that is missed due to attending intervention.

Our goal is to have all our students working at grade level; this intervention is one of the strategies we are using to meet that goal.

What content is covered in the math intervention class?

The math intervention class addresses skills that have been taught in previous grades or grade-level skills that students have been exposed to but have not yet mastered. Data gathered from the classroom and school-wide assessments is used to identify mastery of grade-level skills, identify skill deficits as well as skill strengths. Math strands covered in intervention are number sense, computation, problem solving, algebraic thinking, and math facts.

What content is covered in the reading intervention class?

The reading intervention class addresses skills that have been taught in previous grades or grade-level skills that students have been exposed to but have not yet mastered.  We focus on phonics, reading comprehension, fluency, and common sight words. Our main comprehension strategies include: making connections, asking questions, visualizing, determining importance, inferring, and synthesizing. In addition to practicing reading skills, we also help students select a book appropriate for their reading level.
