Lego Batman, released in 2017, is obviously a movie set in the DC Cinematic Universe that's focused on Batman. However, this movie is different. This movie takes complex and mature emotional themes and fits it into a digestible mold for everyone. Additionally, the movie has an enticing storyline and a happy ending.
This movie goes in-depth on themes like self-isolating and sabotaging due to childhood trauma. The story proves that someone like Batman, a superhero, has emotions and struggles to deal with like everyone else. He learns to accept love and to spread it. He learns to embrace community and commitment and not to hurt others the same way he’s been hurt before. The movie embraces emotional maturity and growth. It shows that in ways like empathy and acceptance, you never really stop growing.
The movie also shows that even a superhero, someone seen as untouchable, struggles too. This movie makes him relatable and it makes it easy to sympathize with him. Even though he’s Batman, he’s just like us in most ways. He’s got past trauma that he’s learning to deal with. He wishes he had less responsibility and could relax more. And he’s scared of clown snakes like everyone else. (/j)
Lego Batman does all of this and more while still being digestible for kids. This movie teaches kids to love and help others. It reminds adults how they’ve felt before and how their communities help(ed) nourish their growth. And it reminds us teenagers, those in the weird limbo of having the same control over ourselves that kids do but having similar expectations on us that adults have, that what we can control is how we treat others and finding loving people who make you a better person is beautiful, but it’s normal to be scared.
If all of that isn’t compelling enough, let's talk numbers. In all places you can review a movie, it has at least a 70%, but most are closer to the high 80s. On Google Reviews, it has 4.8 stars and on Rotten Tomatoes it has 89%. On top of that, Lego Batman made 312 million dollars in the box office.
I hope this has encouraged you to go turn on your TV with a snack in hand, and watch Lego Batman.
