It is important in track to have goals that you are aiming for. Each race you should be looking to improve, and an easy way to do that is to set realistic goals for each meet.
If you are a 1600m runner, you are really just running back to back 400m laps. So knowing what you want to run for each lap will guarantee that during your race you know if you are on pace or not. This will prevent you from going out too fast and also let you know when it is time to speed up.
