Pittsburgh Youth Chorus - Neighborhood Training Choir (Grades 1-3)

PITTSBURGH GIRLS CHOIR (for 1st-12th graders)

Auditions can be scary, but they don’t have to be! At Pittsburgh Girls Choir, we believe that everyone can learn to sing, and our group audition process is a way for teachers to learn which of our choirs would be the best fit for new singers! First and second grade students do not need to audition; they will be placed in Melodia. Students in third through eighth grade are invited to a group audition process to determine best placement. The first part of the group audition will be a vocal warm-up and then choristers will be split by age to learn a piece of music. Students will be introduced to age-appropriate melodic and rhythmic reading concepts and be evaluated on musical and behavioral preparedness for choir. Our Kodaly-based (read: folk-song and musical games based) sequence helps students to learn musical concepts and read music in a fun, natural, and holistic way; so parents of young children need not fear that their student can’t sit for a whole rehearsal. Don’t worry – they definitely won’t be sitting for a whole rehearsal!

While this is happening, parents will receive information on how to participate in Pittsburgh Girls Choir’s programs, and what to expect when your chorister joins. We hope you can join us for this informative group audition process, to meet our teachers and singers, and start your way to singing in a girl-friendly environment!

PITTSBURGH BOY CHOIR

The Pittsburgh Boy Choir is dedicated to training boys in the art of choral singing. Group instruction in sight singing, music theory, and vocal production is carried out in an environment which promotes teamwork while affirming the worth of each individual. Boys develop leadership and self-discipline through a focused commitment to artistic excellence and group accountability. The Choir is open, by audition, to all boys ages six through fifteen with unchanged voices. Boys whose voices change after joining the choir will be accommodated. In succeeding years, the age limit will be extended as the Pittsburgh Boy Choir works to encompass the entire range of the male voice.

MISSION AND HISTORY

Through professional-level choral education and performance, Pittsburgh Youth Chorus strives to provide opportunities for a diverse group of children to realize their innate artistic potential and share experiences that enrich their lives while benefiting their families and communities. From its earliest years to the present, Pittsburgh Youth Chorus has been and continues to be a highly-regarded source of performance-ready talent to many professional organizations, including the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Opera, and the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh. Over the years, nearly 3000 young singers have participated in our progressive program of choral education, mastering challenging choral repertoire in a variety of genres and languages and receiving a solid education in music theory and vocal production. We are deeply indebted to all those who worked tirelessly to enable Pittsburgh Youth Chorus to reach its present level of renown, particularly our founding director Jeanette Tagg and Christine Jordanoff who, serving as Artistic Director from 1986-2014, developed and guided our 3-tiered choral program to its present level of national renown.
