E.N.L. stands for English as a New Language
a special instructional approach for developing the English language proficiency of non-English language students for both social and academic communication.
English language development program to help students acquire communicative and academic competence.
It is comprised of English language learning support in all subjects areas (English language arts, math, science, or social studies) and English language support to focus on the 4 main language domains- reading, writing, speaking, and listening development in the English Language.
The four basic communication skills - reading, writing, listening, and speaking - are emphasized through a variety of activities.

Cultural related lessons and activities to enhance, celebrate, and acknowledge various cultures in our district.
*Class participation is extremely important in ENL, and it is necessary for each student to attain communicative competence. Therefore, all students are encouraged to participate daily.
Entering - No / little English
Emerging - Vocabulary is limited, but rapidly improving. Reads and writes with great difficulty
Transitioning - Has greatly broadened vocabulary skills. Reads and writes with great difficulty
Expanding - Able to participate and excel in all classroom and social activities. Able to read near grade level
Commanding - Has met the linguistic demands necessary to demonstrate English language proficiency in a variety of academic contexts within the grade level
•Scoring at the Commanding proficiency level on the N.Y.S.E.S.L.A.T.
•Scoring at the Expanding/Advanced level on the N.Y.S.E.S.L.A.T. AND 3 or above on the NYS English Language Arts (E.L.A.) assessment in the same year.
•An alternative method of assessment will be used to determine language proficiency for ELLs with disabilities (pending approval).
There are specific learning standards developed by New York State for English as a New Language Learners. All lessons are developed and presented with these standards in mind:
Standard 1: English for information and understanding
Standard 2: English for literary response, enjoyment and expression
Standard 3: English for critical analysis and evaluation
Standard 4: English for social and classroom interaction
Standard 5: English for cross-cultural knowledge and understanding
The NYSITELL stands for the New York State Identification Test for English Language Learners
It is given to students who may be new to the country or entering the school
The NYSITELL determines qualification of E.N.L. services and English proficiency level
NYSESLAT stands for New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test
administered in the spring of each school year
grade leveled tests (K, 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, 9-12)
Includes 4 different areas: speaking, listening, reading, writing
student scores will be available in September
