The West Islip High School Math Department offers a variety of courses that align with the New York State Next Generation Learning Standards. These courses of Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 each culminate in a standardized Regents Exam. Passing the Algebra 1 Exam is a graduation requirement, while the other exams may qualify students for advanced distinction. As students progress through these courses, sometimes they need to adjust their pathway to achieve success. We offer "bridge" courses such as Discovering Geometry and Foundations of Advanced Math.
After students complete the Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 sequences, numerous electives prepare students for college-level math. Pre-Calculus is offered at an Advanced Placement and standard level. Two levels of Advanced Placement Calculus as well as Advanced Placement Statistics are offered. Two levels of IB Math are offered. In Sciences, we offer two levels of Advanced Placement courses that qualify as a Math Credit. Additional math electives include Everyday Statistics Intro to College Math, and Math for Trades which is the ideal math course for a student pursuing a CTE trade such as HVAC or Electrician.
