The Wiscasset Alternative Education (WAE) program is a general education program that serves 9th and 10th grade students in an empowering learning environment with additional supports in social and emotional well being. The WAE was created in 2016 to guide eligible students through their first two years of high school so that by 11th grade they are ready and able to continue on an academic path or choose a vocational path to graduation. Previously, alternative education at Wiscasset High School was a credit recovery program for juniors and seniors who had freshmen and sophomore classes to make up in order to graduate. These credit deficiencies prevented students from attending vocational school and weakened their transcripts for post-high school studies.
The WAE program seeks to empower and engage learners and promotes the idea of being a life-long learner by offering:
Participation in the WAE is a privilege for kids and something they will be proud of. The WAE program provides authentic learning experiences that bring value to the world around us and enable each of us to see the value we bring to the world.
