The Afghan Tutoring Project was launched in January 2023 as a collaboration between UW-Madison students enrolled in English 415 and learners supported by the Educate Girls Now nonprofit organization. Our learners are girls and young women who have been denied educational opportunities in Afghanistan and are looking for resources to practice and learn English in a one-on-one virtual context. Our tutors come from English 415, offering them practical experience and a chance to apply a communicative approach to creating lesson plans and meaningful language learning activities for their learners.
Your contribution to this program can impact a young learner’s life and we are grateful for all the time and energy you put into making lessons, tutoring, and creating a long-lasting bond with your learner!
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the semester tutors will gain a variety of tutoring skills and build a strong foundation in pedagogically sound teaching tactics, which they can directly transfer to their future careers in TESOL and in many related fields.
Two of the main skills are listed below...
Tutors will have access to and be able to utilize numerous resources to include in their weekly lesson plan.
Including:
Focusing on conversational speaking activities every week while occasionally incorporating a mix of reading, listening, and writing
Understanding and using our Evolve series curriculum, which is curated for an EFL teenage-age context
Curate student-specific resources to address the learner’s long-term goals
Tutors might be working with learners who have experienced immense trauma. As a result, we expect our tutors to know fundamentals of trauma-informed approaches to teaching.
Tutors will be able to:
navigate emotionally complex situations
provide structure for their students in their weekly one hour sessions
know how to support and act as a positive influence in their learner’s lives
act as a consistent resource
provide resources that can motivate students and keep them feeling accomplished
