Dave Daniels is a dairy farmer from Union Grove, Wisconsin, and serves as chairman of the Dairy Innovation Hub advisory council. A respected leader in Wisconsin agriculture, Daniels has been actively involved in advancing the state's dairy industry through his service with the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation and his longstanding commitment to agricultural innovation. As a member of the Dairy Task Force 2.0 that helped shape the vision for the Dairy Innovation Hub and as a member of its inaugural advisory council, he has played a key role in strengthening partnerships between farmers, industry, and universities. In his leadership role with the Hub, Daniels helps guide investments in research, education, and workforce development that support dairy sustainability, animal health, nutrition, and rural economic growth, ensuring Wisconsin remains a global leader in dairy production and innovation.
Tom Crave is a founding partner of Crave Brothers Farms in Waterloo, Wisconsin, a family-owned dairy that has grown over the years iand is known for sustainable farming practices and award-winning farmstead cheese. Working alongside brothers Charles, George, and Mark Crave, Tom helped build the business after the family purchased the Waterloo farm in 1980, contributing to its expansion into one of Wisconsin’s recognized dairy and cheese producers. The Crave family’s commitment to quality, stewardship, and long-term sustainability has positioned the farm as a an example of successful multi-generational family business ownership.
Cody Carpenter is a dairy farmer and herd manager at Redrock View Farms in Darlington, Wisconsin, where he works alongside his parents and siblings. A graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in Dairy Science, Cody returned to the farm after working with Accelerated Genetics and has helped advance Redrock View Farms’ focus on herd performance, genetics, sustainability, and innovation. Active in agricultural leadership and advocacy, he serves on the Dairy Business Association board of directors and has been a strong voice for Wisconsin dairy farmers through policy engagement and industry service
Katie Roth is a partner at Banner Ridge Farms in Platteville, Wisconsin, where she works alongside her husband, TJ, and the Shea family in a multi-family farm. Raised on a dairy farm in southwest Wisconsin, Katie earned a bachelor's degree in Animal Science from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and a master's degree in agriculture from Colorado State University. She is actively involved in agricultural education and community outreach, helping connect students, families, and community members with farming and food production through farm tours, local events, and public engagement. In addition to her work on the farm, Katie has contributed to agricultural and higher education organizations, supporting opportunities for learning, leadership, and rural community development.

"Beyond feed: an alternative safety net for Midwest dairies through non-feed cost reduction"
Amon is an assistant professor of dairy business and economic development in the School of Agriculture at the University of Wisconsin–Platteville and a Dairy Innovation Hub–funded faculty member. He earned his PhD in Food and Resource Economics from the University of Florida, where he specialized in applied microeconomics, farmer decision‑making, and the economics of pest and disease management. His research focuses on developing resilient economic strategies for dairy farms, particularly small and mid‑sized operations facing tight margins, rising costs, and technological uncertainty. Through research, teaching, and outreach, Amon works to support farm profitability and long‑term sustainability within Wisconsin’s dairy industry
Project summary: This research explores a key challenge facing Midwest dairy farms: even when milk prices are stable, many farms—especially small and mid-sized operations—still struggle financially because of rising non-feed costs like labor, equipment, and overhead. Current federal safety net programs focus mainly on feed costs, overlooking these larger expenses. As a result, many farms cannot cover their total costs, contributing to ongoing consolidation and the loss of smaller dairy operations.
The project aims to design a new, farmer-informed safety net that better reflects the full cost of running a dairy farm. By gathering input directly from farmers and analyzing their preferences, the study will help develop policy solutions that improve profitability while also supporting environmental stewardship and long-term sustainability. Ultimately, this work seeks to strengthen the future of Midwest dairy farming by keeping more farms viable, supporting rural communities, and informing more effective agricultural policy.

"Moo-ving youth and the dairy industry forward in Wisconsin through outreach programming"
Hernandez is a professor in the Department of Animal and Dairy Sciences at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where she leads a nationally recognized research program in lactation biology. Her work focuses on understanding how the mammary gland adapts during the transition from pregnancy to lactation, with particular emphasis on calcium regulation and serotonin’s role in supporting healthy milk production in dairy cattle. Hernandez’s research also connects animal and human health, helping to improve outcomes for both dairy cows and breastfeeding women. She holds degrees from New Mexico State University and the University of Arizona and previously completed a postdoctoral fellowship in molecular and cellular physiology at the University of Cincinnati.
At UW–Madison, Hernandez teaches courses in lactation physiology, reproductive endocrinology, and scientific communication while directing the Endocrinology and Reproductive Physiology graduate program. Her lab uses both molecular and whole‑animal approaches to study how the mammary gland develops, functions, and maintains mineral balance during lactation. Hernandez has earned multiple national awards for her innovative work and is a frequent contributor to outreach programs that connect dairy science with farmers and the broader public. Her research continues to shape scientific understanding of lactation and support advances in maternal health and dairy farm management.
Project summary: Wisconsin is a national leader in the dairy industry, thanks in part to strong support for research and a commitment to attracting top talent. That commitment extends beyond today’s workforce to the next generation: agriculture accounts for 9.5% of Wisconsin’s jobs, and nationally, the U.S. will need more than 18,000 new college graduates each year for agriculture‑related careers between 2025 and 2030. To help meet this need, this proposal aims to build dairy youth outreach programs that inspire, prepare, and support young people as future leaders in Wisconsin’s dairy sector.
The project focuses on three main efforts: creating regional outreach events to showcase the wide range of educational and career paths in the dairy industry; launching a youth dairy camp to spark early interest and strengthen undergraduate recruitment; and offering hands‑on coursework that teaches essential dairy farm management skills. Expected results include workshops and presentations for the public, informational materials about dairy careers, survey feedback from participants, and outreach stories shared through local media. Ultimately, this work aims to strengthen youth engagement, improve perceptions of the dairy industry, and build a foundation for expanding dairy youth programming in the future.

"Advancing conservation in dairy cropping systems through farmer-led research"
Augarten serves as the On‑Farm Research Program Manager for the UW–Madison Division of Extension, where she leads participatory, farmer‑driven research to advance soil health, water quality, and conservation practice adoption across Wisconsin. She brings extensive experience collaborating with producers, advisors, and conservation partners to design and implement on‑farm trials that generate practical, trusted insights for improving farm viability and environmental outcomes. Her work is grounded in agronomy, nutrient management, and conservation agriculture, with a strong commitment to farmer‑to‑farmer learning and applied research.
Before joining Extension, Augarten worked as a research assistant in UW–Madison’s Agroecosystems and Nutrient Cycling Lab, where she designed and carried out on‑farm studies evaluating soil health in pasture‑based systems. She previously served with UW Extension’s Discovery Farms Program, contributing to water‑quality research as part of the Nitrogen Use Efficiency Project. Earlier in her career, she spent two years in Senegal with the Peace Corps as a sustainable agriculture extension agent, supporting more than 150 farmers through education on soil management, organic gardening, and agroforestry techniques. A native of Westchester County, New York, Augarten holds a bachelor’s degree in international agriculture and rural development from Cornell University and a master’s degree in agroecology from UW–Madison.
Project summary: Wisconsin dairy farmers face growing pressures—from tight profit margins to unpredictable weather and environmental risks—that make it difficult to adopt new conservation practices. This project uses a participatory research model that directly engages farmers to identify emerging challenges, co-develop practical conservation solutions, and test them through on‑farm research trials. By aligning research with producer priorities, the project aims to generate trusted, actionable insights that improve both environmental outcomes and farm resilience.
Working with eight dairy farmers, producer-led watershed groups, local advisors, and UW–Madison Extension, the project focuses on identifying priority conservation issues, co‑designing and conducting one‑year trials, and sharing results through farmer-to-farmer learning, reports, and Extension programming. Outcomes include site-specific research reports, diverse outreach materials, and strengthened producer knowledge of conservation practice performance. This farmer-driven approach supports economically viable conservation adoption and advances Task Force 2.0 recommendations by addressing emerging needs and strengthening collaboration across the UW System and private industry.

“Agricultural safety and health - impacts on our farm labor situation”
Shutske is a professor in the Department of Biological Systems Engineering at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he also serves as an Extension Agricultural Safety and Health Specialist. With more than three decades of experience, he is recognized nationally for his work to improve safety, health, and risk management across agricultural systems. Shutske holds B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from Purdue University, specializing in agricultural mechanization, machinery safety, and engineering. His expertise spans occupational health hazards, farm stress and mental health, safety engineering, and the emerging challenges posed by automation and robotics in modern agriculture.
In his teaching, research, and outreach roles, Shutske focuses on practical, people‑centered solutions that help farmers, workers, and rural communities thrive. His recent projects have examined airborne hazards, worker roles in antimicrobial resistance, digital technology adoption on farms, and the impacts of stress on health and injury risk. Shutske holds affiliate appointments in the UW School of Medicine and Public Health and previously led the UW Center for Agricultural Safety and Health. Before joining UW–Madison, he spent 18 years at the University of Minnesota and worked with the Illinois Farm Bureau, strengthening his long-standing commitment to agricultural safety and community well‑being.
Project summary: Wisconsin’s dairy industry depends heavily on immigrant Latino workers, many of whom face serious challenges in staying healthy and safe. Language barriers, limited transportation, lack of insurance, and rural isolation make it difficult for workers to access healthcare or receive timely treatment. The nature of dairy work also brings higher risks—injuries, exposure to zoonotic diseases, stress, and unmanaged chronic conditions like diabetes and heart disease. Supporting the health of these essential workers is not only vital for their well‑being but also critical to the long‑term stability and success of Wisconsin’s dairies.
The Wellness on Wheels (WoW) project brings health support directly to farms by offering bilingual education, wellness coaching, screenings, and emergency response training. Community health workers will lead 12‑week sessions on farms, while Promotores de Bienestar—peer leaders from within the workforce—will be trained to sustain health practices long‑term. Through assessments, surveys, interviews, and tracking changes in behaviors such as PPE use and participation in screenings, WoW will identify effective strategies to improve daily habits, emergency preparedness, and access to care. The project will also produce practical tools and trained peer leaders to expand its impact statewide. This effort supports Dairy Task Force 2.0 Recommendation #11, which emphasizes helping rural businesses strengthen workplace health practices and aligns with the goals of the National Dairy FARM Program.

"Evaluating the impact of captive bolt placement in cadaver heads from cull Jersey cows, Holstein breeding bulls, and fed Holstein cattle"
Anderson is a scientist and trainer at the Humane Handling Institute (HHI) at UW-River Falls. Her research and training focus heavily on livestock welfare, specifically the enhancement of pre-slaughter transport, captive bolt stunning, and on-farm euthanasia
Project summary: This project aims to improve the effectiveness of penetrating captive bolt (PCB) stunning and euthanasia in cattle by refining placement recommendations based on anatomical evidence. Specifically, it focuses on three understudied groups—cull Jersey cows, Holstein breeding bulls, and fed Holstein cattle—for which current guidelines lack strong scientific validation. By examining how bolt placement relates to tissue depth, brain structures, and particularly the thalamus (a critical region for maintaining sensibility), the study seeks to identify placements that reliably produce rapid and sustained unconsciousness.
To achieve this, researchers will analyze cadaver heads collected from slaughter facilities, measuring tissue thickness and mapping bolt trajectories to determine whether key brain regions are impacted. The study will compare multiple commonly recommended placement positions and define an “ideal” placement that maximizes the likelihood of thalamic damage. Findings will provide evidence-based guidance for industry stakeholders, including veterinarians, producers, and processors, ultimately enhancing animal welfare by improving the consistency and humaneness of stunning and euthanasia practices.

“Advancing dairy research at UW–Platteville with Automated Milking Systems"
Guenther is an Assistant Professor of dairy management and applied dairy nutrition at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. His teaching and research focus on dairy cattle nutrition, calf health, lactation biology, and management practices that improve animal performance and welfare. Born and raised on a Wisconsin dairy farm, Guenther holds degrees from the University of Findlay and North Dakota State University and is a PhD candidate at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he studies the effects of early-life nutrition and heat stress on dairy heifer development and future productivity
Project summary: At Pioneer Farm, the Lely robotic milking system creates a unique opportunity to generate continuous, cow-level data that can support research in dairy management, calf health, and applied dairy nutrition. The robots collect information on milk yield, milk components, somatic cell count, cow activity, and other performance indicators, providing a rich dataset that can help identify early signs of health challenges, evaluate nutritional interventions, and improve management strategies. This technology serves as a platform for studying how nutrition and management practices influence both animal health and farm productivity.
