The DELF (Diploma of French Language Studies) and the DALF (Advanced Diploma of French Language Studies) are the first lifelong diplomas for adult of French as a second language with international recognition.
Today, there are 1200 exam centers in 175 countries that offer the DELF and the DALF - for a total of 400,000 candidates around the world each year. Since their inception in 1985 there have been more than 7,000,000 candidates.
DELF & DALF French Exam
DELF: Diplôme d'Études en Langue Française (Diploma of French Language Studies), A1 to B2 levels.
DALF: Diplôme Approfondi de Langue Française (Advanced Diploma of French Language Studies), C1 and C2 levels.
Divided into six diplomas corresponding to the scale of the Common European Reference Framework for Languages: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2.
Issued by the French Ministry of Education, internationally recognised and valid for life.
Designed to assess the communicative skills of a candidate in a real-life situation, using authentic documents, rather than the linguistic and formal grammatical knowledge.
CEFR, or the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, is an internationally recognised system for describing language proficiency.
The CEFR levels are broken into six levels of language proficiency; with three broad divisions and two sub-divisions:
A - Basic User
A1: Breakthrough or Beginner
A2: Waystage or Elementary
B - Independent User
B1: Threshold or Intermediate
B2: Vantage or Upper-Intermediate
C - Proficient User
C1: Effective Operational Proficiency or Advanced
C2: Mastery or Proficiency
DELF A1 tests the most basic level at which a language is used, called the "discovery" stage. At this stage, you need to be able to interact in simple ways. You’ll be expected to be able to speak about yourself and your immediate environment.
Exam duration (not counting the oral section): 1 hour 15 minutes

DELF A2 tests whether you have achieved basic competency as a "social actor". This means you’ll be challenged to communicate through simple, routine tasks requiring the most common polite phrases and exchanges of information.
Exam duration: 1 hour 40 minutes
