We are delighted to offer our students the opportunity to engage in cultural immersion project which will directly benefit one of the most marginalised communities in Hong Kong.
The Centre for Refugees is one of West Island School's Community Partners, and they deliver incredible support and outreach work to the vulnerable asylum seeker and refugee community of Hong Kong. During Horizons Week, our students are invited to visit the Centre in Chungking Mansions and participate in talks with the refugees, create and share food with the community, attend a Refugee Walk and enjoy a Five Senses Tour of Chungking Mansions.
This is an opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of important global issues and authentically engage with diverse communities. This promises to be a thoughtful and transformative experience.

Led by Georgina from Image Box Photography, the week will consist of understanding where influences come from, how ideas form and how photographers get to the final image. The students will start to create their own stories and bodies of work through the lens, eventually working toward a final piece to display and discuss. You will see the students research and experiment with photography, creativity and find influences, unfolding through a sketch book of ideas.
The course will have support booklets to refer to throughout and at later dates when the student wants to strengthen their new found skill.
Technical knowledge of the cameras working will cover shutter speed, iso, aperture, light metering, lenses and how shape, colour, mood, story and relevance of subjects create images. The workshop will cover the main elements of photography needed to gain the knowledge of a photographers working world, from ideas and influences to technical knowledge, to discussions of each other’s work, through to framing their own piece and presenting it at an exhibition.
