RE: School Year 2022-23 for Publicity Notification
Dear Parents/Guardians,
As part of the Winton Woods City Schools communication plan, the Communications Department takes photos, promotional videos and writes articles that highlight student activities, athletics, academics, recognitions and awards. These photos, videos and articles are often sent to area newspapers, used in district publications, displayed on the district website, shared on social media outlets including Facebook, Instagram, NextDoor, LinkedIn, YouTube, and Twitter, posted on local media websites and aired on local television. Typically, publicity includes a photo, the student’s name, grade and school.
If you prefer that your child NOT be included in this positive district publicity, we ask that you send a written notification to the address below indicating parent/guardian name (printed and signature), student name and grade by September 16, 2022.
Please note that this publicity notification is different from directory information and/or other forms you may have signed. This deals exclusively with publicity. Even if you have signed a letter this year dealing with your student’s directory information, you still need to send written notification directly to us for publicity purposes. If we do not receive notification by the above date, we will assume that your permission is implied.
Our goal is to showcase our students’ accomplishments and recognitions, as well as our district’s outstanding programs and activities. We would be proud to include your student(s) in this endeavor.
We are sad to inform you that Kingston Mason, one of our seventh-grade students, unexpectedly passed away on Friday, February 25.
Our crisis team including counselors and designed staff will be available for students and staff first thing Monday morning. Staff will be monitoring students to determine whether personalized support is needed. We ask that parents also assess their students to determine if they need additional support during this difficult time. If so, please contact a mobile crisis unit at 513-281-CARE(2273) or a crisis text hotline at 741741 (automatic Spanish translation).
The faculty, staff, and board of education extend our heartfelt sympathies to the Mason family and to all of their friends. Our school community will miss Kingston very much. He will forever be a cherished member of our Warrior family.
We will share arrangements as they become available.
Dear Parents and Guardians:
There is a Winter Storm Warning for portions of southwest Ohio. According to the weather service, we are in the pathway of the storm. This storm warning remains in effect from midnight tonight to 7:00 a.m. Friday. We are expecting heavy mixed precipitation with snow and sleet accumulations of 1 to 3 inches and ice accumulations of two-tenths to one quarter of an inch. As you may know, our Cincinnati weather can be unpredictable.
In anticipation of the storm, it is imperative that you stay tuned to your local media outlets for school closings. We are advising your child to take power cords and technology devices home, in order to stay current with asynchronous lessons.
In addition to the storm warning, we will make a minor adjustment to our calendar. On Monday, February 7, all students and staff will report to school. This was originally scheduled as a professional development (P.D.) day for teachers. We will move the professional development day to Monday, February 14; students will not report. On Friday, February 11, students will receive asynchronous assignments through Echo, Canvas, and Google Classroom. Students are expected to complete all assignments and report any academic struggles and/or concerns to the teacher no later than Tuesday, February 15.
Parents, please note, adjusting these dates will guarantee that all students will have the same required days in school. We are merely changing the instructional date to the 7 and the P.D. date to the 14. Thank you for your flexibility as we work diligently to provide a quality educational experience for your child.
Sincerely,
Anthony G. Smith

UPDATED: January 21, 2021 @ 1:30 p.m.
To Parents, Students:
I am excited to share the great news – we will ALL return to in-person learning on Monday, January 24th. Please make sure that you bring your Chromebook, power cords, and the necessary equipment to have a productive week. Having the nine days away from campus to refresh will prove to be beneficial. Our staff numbers have improved; therefore, we expect to see ALL students ready to learn and prepare to lead. We will not offer a remote option at this time.
Here are a few items that must be adhered to upon your return:
Masks must be worn at all times by staff and students.
Follow ALL CDC guidelines.
Remember to continue social distancing (when possible).
If you have COVID-like symptoms, please stay home and notify the school.
Continue to wash your hands for a minimum of 20 seconds.
Enjoy reconnecting with staff and students.
Finally, please remember, every home is eligible to order free at-home COVID-19 tests. These tests are completely free. Orders will usually ship in 7-12 days. https://www.covidtests.gov/
Do not delay in ordering your tests now so you have them when you need them.
Sincerely,
Anthony G. Smith

Dear Students, Parents, and Staff:
Thank you for understanding the need to refresh school for the next few weeks. As I mentioned in my previous correspondence on Friday, January 7, the staff absence patterns due to illness were at an all-time high. Having the proper staff to interact and educate your student is our main focus. However, it is extremely important that we focus on physical safety and mental health factors as well.
Please note: There are no immediate plans to provide a virtual educational experience beyond Monday, January 24. Staff will be expected to return in person on Tuesday, January 18, and ALL students are expected to return on Monday, January 24.
Parents, please make sure your child is logging in and staying attentive during instruction. Please remember when you can to social distance. Wash hands for a minimum of 20 seconds, and, above all, stay home if you are experiencing symptoms.
We are working diligently to make sure that we are able to showcase our district with future events like the following:
Performing Arts Boosters Talent Show
In-person parent conferences
Exhibition night and art show
Middle school drama production
High School Athletic Signing Day
Band, choir, and orchestra concerts
Night of Freedom
High school musical
Prom
High School Academic Signing Day
Senior nights
Honors Diploma Night
Graduation
Finally, please consider encouraging your family, friends, and loved ones to get the vaccine and booster. Masks will be worn during all school events when teachers return on the 18 and students return on the 24. Thanks for your cooperation and support.
Sincerely,
Anthony G. Smith

Dear Staff and Parents:
After several days of monitoring our district’s attendance of staff and students, the decision to close school is evident. The omicron variant is affecting the staff/student ratio to the degree that it is placing an overabundance of students with a limited amount of staff to provide effective instructional strategies.
We were hoping that the numbers would change after winter break, but unfortunately we could not avoid this untimely shutdown. Many staff members as well as students are reporting mild symptoms. However, the CDC guidelines does stress the importance of staying home in the event you have symptoms related to COVID, and people with symptoms must be quarantined for a minimum of five days. This is taking a toll on the school district and must be addressed by closing temporarily.
I do know for many families this may be an extra burden. However, it is critical that we make tough decisions now in order to be more productive in the future.
Staff will work remotely, beginning on January 10th to January 14th. Staff will return in person on Tuesday, January 18th, the day after the Martin Luther King official holiday.
Beginning January 10th, students will be engaged academically following the asynchronous education plan of action. Beginning the week of January 18th, all students will be following the synchronous plan.
Beginning on Monday, January 10th, schools will be closed for students and they will return to school in person on Monday, January 24.
Beginning January 10th, all athletic competitions will be held without fan attendance in an attempt to stop the spread of this disruptive virus. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work tirelessly to provide your student with a quality education.

Dear Warrior Supporters:
We are pleased to announce your Winton Woods Warriors football team is headed to Canton, Ohio (birthplace of the College Football Hall of Fame) to participate in the Division II Championship game against Archbishop Hoban on Thursday, December 2 at 7 p.m. These young men have persevered, followed a great coaching staff, and represented Winton Woods City Schools in a positive manner.
In order to show community support, Winton Woods City Schools will be closed on Thursday, December 2, and Friday, December 3 in order for fans to travel to this event, which is four hours away. This is the same process that we followed in our state championship showcase on November 30, 2017.
To assist with our students' academic momentum this semester, the asynchronous learning platform will be used for assignments on Thursday and Friday. Thank you for your continued support of all students attending Winton Woods, a district of destination and, as always, Go Warriors!

Good Afternoon, Winton Woods Warrior Families,
Thank you for your patience as we create our schoolwide procedures for another exciting year. For the first time since 2008, Winton Woods City Schools is providing transportation for high school students who reside outside the appropriate one-mile radius. To ensure that all transportation routes are completed in an efficient manner, Winton Woods High School is making a slight adjustment to our dismissal time. Beginning Tuesday, September 7, 2021, the new dismissal time for Winton Woods High School on the NORTH CAMPUS will be 3:00 p.m.
We are also excited to offer our popular high school open house combined with the first home football game of the year this Friday, September 3, 2021. The open house will begin promptly at 4:30, and will conclude at 6:30 p.m. The open house will be held at the Hall of Fame Plaza adjacent to the football stadium.
We are excited that the Warriors will compete in the Skyline CrossTown ShootOut Kick off against the Eastern Cincinnati Conference Co-Champions, the Kings Knights, at 7:00 p.m. in the Charlie Fredrick Stadium. PLease come out and meet the North Campus staff and cheer our Warrior team on to victory.
Thank you again for your flexibility and assistance in making this school year the best ever. And always, Go Warriors!

Dear Parents and Guardians:
As we reflect on the opening of school, I wanted to thank you for your patience as we continue to work through the difficult transitions, mainly transporting your children to and from school. We realize that there were transportation glitches that altered your schedules. I would like to personally offer my apologies for any setbacks and/or problems this may have caused.
I can assure you that we are working around the clock to correct any issue with transportation that you may have endured. Many of you pitched in and offered great suggestions to help alleviate the confusion. We have secured alternate routes on the South Campus in an attempt to create a more efficient, smoother traffic flow. To our neighbors on Winton and Farragut: Thank you for your extreme patience and flexibility.
We have also created some very unique arrival and dismissal opportunities for our parents who have children that begin school at multiple times. A special thanks goes out to our students who remained relaxed and patient.
There are some incredible attributes that we all should be proud of. To my parents and guardians: Thank you for preparing your children to have a growth mindset, ready to learn and eager to see old friends while making new ones. Second, the Winton Woods staff is incredible; they remain excited and energized to offer all students a quality educational experience that will guide them for a lifetime. The keyword for today is agency - enduring challenges; understanding setbacks while increasing confidence.
Our goal is unwavering; we are all committed to helping all students reach their highest potential. We know there may be obstacles in the future, but working collaboratively we will be able to overcome them together.
Finally, thank you for sending your most precious commodity to Winton Woods City Schools. I hope to see you at open houses, Board meetings, award programs, performances, and athletic events in the near future throughout the year. Please look forward to receiving a survey from us regarding our service delivery model to our families. As always, Go Warriors!

Dear Warrior Families, Staff and Community Members:
As we embark on another exciting school year, please remember from my last communication on August 5 that all staff and students are to wear masks each day regardless of vaccination status. We have clear indicators from the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) and ODH (Ohio Department of Health) that wearing masks reduces the spread of COVID-19.
It is extremely important that we all work together to create a safe educational environment where all students have the ability to thrive while reaching their highest potential. It is also paramount that our staff has the opportunity to provide services to all students while staying safe as well. Thank you for your cooperation, commitment, and patience as we work tirelessly to provide your child with a quality educational PBL (project-based learning) experience.
I look forward to seeing you at plays, board meetings, concerts, athletic events, open houses, and parent conferences. The support and encouragement that you have displayed during these challenging times does not go unnoticed. Thank you for sending your child to Winton Woods City Schools, a district of destination. Please remember to complete all of the information in InfoSnap, to make sure that your family data is complete and accurate.
CHROMEBOOK DISTRIBUTION FOR STUDENTS IN GRADE 1-12
Winton Woods City Schools will be issuing a district Chromebook to all students in grades 1-12 for the 2021-22 school year.
Prior to arrival during the designated times below, parents and/or guardians must:
bring government issued identification, and
complete the annual verification/Infosnap process for returning students. Note: On 7/29/21, snapcodes were emailed to the primary contact on file. Families without an email account were mailed the information last week.
To enhance the safety of our families and staff, is it important that you remain in your car at all times. We are grateful for the partnership of our students, parents, staff, and community members and, as always, Go Warriors!

Good evening, Warrior Families:
I am sure by now that you have heard about the COVID-19 Delta variant. Districts across the country are preparing to receive our most precious commodities: our children. As we prepare for the first day of school on August 23rd, we are very proud to announce that we had a very successful summer program, which included enrichment, without incident.
Please keep in mind that Winton Woods will follow all guidelines of the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) as well as the ODH (Ohio Department of Health). It is our mission to educate every student with fidelity while making sure everyone is safe and protected at all times. I am in constant contact with the leading epidemiologist, Dr. Feagins, as well as the Health Commissioner of Hamilton County Public Health, Greg Kesterman. I just wanted to assure you that we are working diligently to provide a safe educational environment for all students and staff.
Please look for a corresponding email next week that will give you specific information regarding our COVID-protocol guidelines for the 2021-2022 school year. I hope that you are enjoying your summer finding time to reconnect with loved ones. It is my goal to meet with all families in person in the weeks and months ahead. Finally, I would like to let you know that we are working closely with our medical partners at Mercy Health to create additional vaccine sites prior to the start of school. Thank you for sending your child to Winton Woods City Schools, a district of destination.

Hello Warrior Families,
We are pleased to announce that our district partner, Mercy Health, will offer a free Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine clinic for all students ages 12 and up (except graduating seniors). This voluntary vaccination opportunity requires two doses given three weeks apart. Both doses are completely free regardless of whether you have health insurance or not. To schedule an appointment, a parent and/or legal guardian must be present with their student(s) on both dates. Information regarding a vaccine clinic for graduating seniors will be shared soon.
There are a number of reasons to consider taking advantage of this opportunity.
Pfizer has reported that this vaccine is safe and tremendously effective at protecting adolescents from COVID-19 infection.
As more community members become fully vaccinated (both doses), we will see fewer COVID-19 cases.
A fully vaccinated person is very unlikely to become a source of COVID-19 spread to anyone else.
Attached is a vaccine fact sheet for more information. For additional information, please go to CDC.gov.

Good afternoon, Warrior Families and Supporters:
While we did not prevail during the election (operating levy issue #8), I would like to express my gratitude and thanks to all of the voters that turned out to support our students. I am sure that you were as disappointed about the results as we all were. However, your willingness to post yard signs, distribute literature, make phone calls, and convey the message of hope about our work with every student, in every seat, every day is compelling and you should be commended.
Some of our students have given me feedback that they are perplexed, confused, and surprised that community members actually voted against their future, growth, development, and opportunities. In some cases, they believe that voting is just a formality and adults really do care about them reaching their highest potential. While we did not gain as much momentum as we would have liked, our mission is still the same: To educate all children with fidelity.
Our new symbol of hope, a heart adorned in our district’s colors of blue and green, reads, “Love our children, schools and community”. We have a lot to be proud of in our district. Three of our students will be awarded with associate’s degrees during this year‘s Commencement ceremony on May 20th. Thirty-nine students have earned the coveted State of Ohio Honors Diploma, the largest number of students to meet these criteria in the history of Woods City Schools.
Finally, the staff and students appreciate the new campuses, and they feel pride about learning in 21st century spaces that will enhance their collaboration, creativity, growth and development. I am thankful that so many of our families are following the guidelines of the CDC and becoming more aware of the vaccine opportunities available.
We will move forward with speed, moving fast even if it is imperfect and bumpy; and with sustainability – we are better off moving together and in ways we can sustain over time. Our children need our full energy and attention. Anything less means we are not doing right by them. Strong schools and strong communities work together for the betterment of our students.
In the tradition of Teacher Appreciation Week, please thank a teacher for their hard work and dedication to our most precious commodity, our students. I personally want to thank all of our staff for all you do to ensure that we equip the whole child with everything they need to be successful. Working in isolation, we accomplish some things. Working together, we can accomplish anything. Please look for more information in the near future regarding our comprehensive Summer School program that will take place on June 7th through July 1st.
Sincerely,
Anthony G. Smith

2021 OPERATING LEVY INFORMATION
ACADEMICS, FINE ARTS AND ATHLETICS
This proposal will support our children and community by continuing to offer robust academic programs, incredible fine arts, and athletic programs.
EXPAND THE 5-STAR RATED PRESCHOOL VILLAGE
Additionally, this $3.2 million levy proposal will support our community by expanding our Preschool Village. There is consensus in the field of education that investing in a high-quality preschool program can have a greater impact on the child, family, and community for the future. The vision of the Preschool Village is to have enough space to provide all children in the district with the opportunity to attend our 5-star rated preschool as well as have access to dental, medical, and vision services. The State of Ohio funds only 30% of the total operating expenses for preschool leaving 70% funded by local tax dollars. These levy dollars will be for operating expenses that will occur with an expansion of preschool including increased staffing.
SCHOOL SAFETY
Winton Woods City Schools believes students must first feel safe and secure in order to grow academically, emotionally, and socially. Because every emergency situation is unique, we continue to invest in preparing our students and staff for serious disruptions and threats. Like many other school districts, these funds will support an increased number of school resource officers from one for the whole district to two for each new campus.
INCREASED ENROLLMENT
In the last six years, more students have become interested in the Winton Woods educational experience due to our quality academic programs and opportunities.

Winton Woods District Adds Operational Levy to May 2021 Ballot
The Winton Woods City Schools Board of Education has placed an operational levy, Issue #8, on the ballot for Tuesday, May 4, 2021. This levy would generate $3.2 million annually for operating expenses, which includes instructional services, maintaining all educational and extracurricular opportunities for every student. This is the first operational levy placed on the ballot since 2009.
This crucial levy will fund essential day-to-day operational expenses such as high-quality staff, utilities, classroom technology for all students, supplies and equipment. “There is often a source of misunderstanding regarding bond proceeds. Bond proceeds can only be used for brick and mortar, which constitutes the construction of new facilities. We are very excited that our taxpayers showed the love for our children, our schools, and community by passing the bond in 2016, and we are extremely grateful.
Winton Woods City School District has not had an increase in operating expenses (new money) since 2009, which equates to twelve years,” said District Treasurer Randy Seymour. “The average homeowner would pay around $20 per month, which equates to $243.25 per $100,000 market value per year.”
“This levy will also provide funding for key identified areas of need including the sustainability of our 5-star preschool program and all-day kindergarten, increased enrollment, additional school resource officers and the restoration of busing for high school students in the district. This will begin in August 2021,” said Superintendent Anthony G. Smith. There are consequences if the levy does not pass. Superintendent Smith says there will be severe cuts made in all departments, and extracurricular activities will be reduced. “Unfortunately, cutting educational and extracurricular activities during the pandemic would overwhelm our staff, students, and our community.
“In the 2016-17 school year, the district began to offer all-day preschool. The transition from half to full day services increased enrollment greatly and created an extensive waitlist. Passage of this levy would provide more services to our students as they enter our 5-star preschool program.”
With the opening of two new innovative campuses, the district’s top priority is safety. “We currently do not have enough highly trained school resource officers,” said Executive Director of Business Affairs Steve Denny. “We need a minimum of four school resource officers to support our two campuses. The levy proposal will enable the resource officers to meet all of the safety guidelines. We all know there are no substitutes for highly trained school resource officers to support this important student, staff, and community initiative.”
In the last four years, more students have become interested in the Winton Woods educational experience due to our quality academic programs. “We have grown as a district and need to expand our system to make room for additional students,” said school board member Gino McGowens. “This levy will help accommodate the increase in our student population that is well over 4,000 students. It is essential that we continue quality educational services for every student, in every seat, every day.”
Where do campaign funds come from? The district cannot fund the campaign to encourage residents to vote for this levy. However, a group of parents and community members has formed a committee called Citizens for Educational Progress and School Issues (CEPSI) to generate support for the levy that will be on the May 4 ballot. Our children, our parents, our community deserve the best to ensure Winton Woods City Schools will continue to become a proud district of destination.

Updated: February 26, 2021 10:57 a.m.
Dear Warrior Families:
We were patiently waiting to make sure that the staff’s second vaccine was on schedule. We now have confirmation that it will be administered on March 3. During our most recent staff survey, we realized that many staff members did have an adverse reaction to the vaccine. I am sure that you are well aware that it is difficult securing the services of substitute teachers throughout the state during this pandemic.
We are very excited to announce that all students are scheduled to return to school on Monday, March 8. During my last communication, information was presented regarding our blended operation as well as the vaccine for staff. On Monday, March 1 and Tuesday, March 2, we will have asynchronous learning (students engaging in working on their assignments at their own pace) so that the staff can prepare for our full school operation, Phase IV, on Monday, March 8. Staff members will be receiving the second vaccine on Wednesday, March 3. Students will remain remote in asynchronous learning on Wednesday, March 3; Thursday, March 4; and Friday, March 5.
Note: Friday, March 12 is a scheduled records day and professional development day for staff. Students will not report. We will resume school for all students all week beginning on Monday, March 15. This should take us into Spring Break that begins the week of March 22.
Students in grades preschool to 6 will return to school after Spring Break on Monday, March 29. We are thrilled that students in grades 7-12 will begin in the new North Campus on Tuesday, March 30 after teachers have moved in on March 29. Thank you for your patience during Phase IV – GETTING ALL STUDENTS BACK TO SCHOOL.
In order for this transition to run smoothly, everyone is required to continue to wear masks, wash hands vigorously for 20 seconds, and follow the CDC guidelines of 3 to 6 feet. Thank you for sending your most precious investment to Winton Woods City Schools, a district of destination.
Sincerely,
Anthony G Smith

Message Note: Superintendent Update
Updated: January 15, 2021 4:01 p.m.
Dear Winton Woods Community:
Effective at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 14, Hamilton County was declared purple by the Ohio Public Alert System. The Ohio Department of Education has indicated that schools are not mandated to operate in an inclusive remote manner should a county be categorized as purple.
Based on the consultation and advisement from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), it is noted that schools have been deemed as one of the safest environments for students to be in. Schools have some control regarding students’ safety, allowing students to distance themselves by six feet, wearing protective masks, and routinely washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
In short, schools have been declared by experts as some of the safest institutions to deliver services during this pandemic. Unless there is an order from Governor DeWine, or a recommendation from the Centers for Disease Control regarding safety, Winton Woods City Schools will remain in phase III, which is the blended model.
Blue students will report one day only after the January 18 Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. All students will remain virtual on Wednesday, January 20. Green students will report on January 21 and 22 as scheduled. Please remember, students with special needs will report on Tuesday, January 19; Thursday, January 21; and Friday, January 22.
As always, thank you for your patience and commitment as we continue to navigate through this process. Please encourage your child to do their very best on all assignments, remote and in-person. If you have any questions, please contact the Office of the Superintendent.
Sincerely,
Anthony G Smith

Message Note: Calendar Revisions for Third Quarter
Please translate the following in Spanish, French, Nepali and Fulani
Updated: December 15, 2020 12:12 p.m.
Winton Woods City Schools will take every precaution to ensure that all students and staff are safe. Over the past several weeks we have all seen an increase in COVID-19 cases reported in Hamilton County. We are pleased to announce that through very informative data from students, staff, parents, as well as the CDC, we were able to reduce the rate of exposure in the district by remaining remote the week after Thanksgiving.
As we anticipate the the continuation of the holiday season, Winton Woods City Schools will implement the following:
Third quarter will begin with the virtual learning model for all students and staff from January 5 to 8, 2021. (Students and staff will not report in person.)
Winton Woods City Schools will return to the blended learning model on January 11, 2021:
In-person learning for Warrior Blue students every Monday and Tuesday, beginning January 11 and 12.
In-person learning for Warrior Green students every Thursday and Friday, beginning January 14 and 15.
In the event that COVID-19 cases are on the decline in Hamilton County, we plan to transition to phase IV, the full-time face-to-face learning model, on February 9, 2021.
Please keep in mind that students who have been identified with special educational needs will return four days per week beginning Monday, January 11 - Tuesday, January 12; and Thursday, January 14 - Friday, January 15.

Update: November 13, 2020 3:02 p.m.
Dear Parents/Guardians:
With the Thanksgiving holiday quickly approaching and the increase of new reported COVID-19 cases in Hamilton County, Winton Woods City Schools will restructure the plan to transition to Phase IV. After conducting over 40 focus groups, listening to the hearts of many dedicated parents, staff members and stakeholders, I am clearly aware that some Thanksgiving traditions will continue. With that in mind, the entire district – students and staff - will begin in virtual status on Monday, November 30. Face-to-face operations could resume as early as Monday, December 7, if the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)/Governor DeWine’s COVID-19 assessments have deemed it appropriate.
During this transition, the district will return to operate in Phase III. Students with special needs will return four days per week: Monday, December 7, Tuesday, December 8; and Thursday, December 10, and Friday, December 11. Blue students will report on Monday-Tuesday, December 7-8. Green students report on Thursday-Friday, December 10-11. We will continue to follow this schedule during the week of December 14-18.
Our students’ safety is a top priority. Please look for updates during the winter break regarding the transition plan after the first semester at wintonwoods.org. I know that these transitions have been challenging; however, safety regulations must be adhered to at all times. Thank you for your patience.
Sincerely,
Anthony G. Smith

Based on additional data from the state regarding school-age children, Winton Woods City Schools will be moving to a full implementation of Phase III, the blended learning model. Beginning on Monday, October 19, 2020, all students who did not request to remain virtual on the recent survey will begin attending school twice per week. During the week of September 21, students should have been notified whether they are assigned to Warrior Blue, every Monday and Tuesday or Warrior Green Days, every Thursday and Friday. If parents would like another opportunity to select virtual learning for their student, please contact your child’s school directly.
In order to create the optimal plan, students and staff will be expected to safely distance themselves, wash hands for at least 20 seconds, and will be required to wear a mask. A Warrior Blue/Green day was the only way to accomplish the six (6) feet distance in compliance with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) regulations. All students will remain home and participate in the virtual experience every Wednesday until further notice. The virtual day will give the custodial team the ability to provide a deep, intense cleaning prior to students returning on their official green and blue days.
A blended learning playbook has been created to support our students, staff, and parents. Please go to www.wintonwoods.org/return for additional information and resources.
Winton Woods City Schools is dedicated to the safety of our students, staff, and community, and ensuring all students achieve their highest potential. We will continue to follow the guidance from the Governor as well as the CDC. For updates and information, please visit our website at www.wintonwoods.org.

VIRTUAL DAYS:
Establish routines and expectations: Please develop a consistent routine and expectations to support your student’s school schedule to complete online learning, assignments, and assessments.
Choose a good place to learn: Monitor and support student progress through an online curriculum with parent/guardian access to the online platform and progress information.
Stay in touch: Communicate questions and concerns immediately to staff.
Help students ‘own’ their learning: No one expects parents to be full-time teachers or educators. Parents can simply provide support and encouragement, and set expectations for the child to do their part.
Begin and end the day by checking-in - example questions are as follows:
In the morning, you might ask:
• What classes/subject do you have today?
• Do you have any assessments?
• What resources do you need?
• What can I do to help?
At the end of the day you might ask:
• How far did you get in your learning tasks today?
• What did you discover? What was challenging?
• What could we do to make tomorrow better?
Establish time for quiet, reflection, physical activity and exercise: Being intentional about your student’s health is vital and wellbeing for learning.

Dear Parents/Guardians:
I would like to take this time to present some very important long-awaited news regarding our district’s transition plan. First of all, I want to personally thank you for your patience and perseverance in facilitating the virtual educational experience for your children in the midst of challenging circumstances. The week of September 14 began our fourth full week of virtual school. We have been very intentional in creating a safe reentry plan for all students and staff as well as your family members at home. We began this transitional plan with phase I - staff returned first - to make sure that all of the safety regulations from the CDC were followed and adhered to. As you may be aware, our students are assessed every five weeks to determine their rate of academic progress. In order to maintain continuity, the five-week strategy is by far the best plan of action.
On Wednesday, September 16, you will receive a brief questionnaire asking if you want your child to remain in our virtual academic experience or transition to our blended educational opportunity. In order to create a safe educational environment, it is critical that you complete this questionnaire and provide us with as much information as possible by this Friday, September 18. We will review all surveys the week of September 21. During this data week we are planning to offer half-day virtual educational services for your child in order for the staff to compile important data and contact you with information that will enable us to reopen school in a safe, predictable, transparent manner. Please note: If you want your child to remain virtual, please complete the questionnaire specifying that you would like to continue with the virtual educational plan.
On Monday, September 28, which is an official professional development day, students will not have face-to-face technological services. Services will resume on Tuesday, September 29 regarding phase II – our blended approach. During this transitional phase, students in preschool, kindergarten, ESL, and students with special needs will report to school in person. The teachers that serve these students will provide you with the necessary information regarding your child’s new service delivery plan, better known as blended or phase II.
During the week of October 5, phase III will be implemented for those students who did not want to remain virtual. Students will begin attending school twice per week. Some students will begin on Warrior Blue Days, every Monday and Tuesday. The other students will attend on Warrior Green Days, every Thursday and Friday. In order to create the optimal plan, this requires students to safely distance themselves every 6 feet, wash hands for at least 20 seconds, and wearing a mask at all times is required. A Warrior Blue/Green day was the only way to accomplish this safety goal. All students will remain home and participate in the virtual experience every Wednesday. This will give the custodial team the ability to provide a deep, intense cleaning prior to students returning on their official green and blue days.
Please rest assured, we are putting all safety plans into place in order to provide students and staff with a safe, comprehensive environment. During phase IV, all students are scheduled to report on Monday, November 30, five days a week, in person. We are hopeful that this plan can be implemented all the way up to winter break, which officially begins at the end of the day on Friday, December 18. We will continue to work closely with our partnered pandemic experts, LJB, with the goal of maintaining our final phase of implementation. Please look forward to receiving a phone call, a text message, or an email from your teachers specifying the plan that your child will follow in the first semester. Please note: If there are extenuating circumstances contact your child’s principal for assistance. Thank you for your patience. Transportation and food service will be provided to your child as scheduled. Thank you for sending your child to Winton Woods City Schools, a district of destination.

Assessments are powerful tools that give our staff an opportunity to gain a more complete picture of their students’ strengths and opportunities for growth as we support them with instructional decisions for their academic achievement.
To support parents and families during remote testing including the upcoming MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) Test, we are excited to share our new Testing and Assessment Guidance Webpage. The resources help students and parents to understand what MAP Testing is, what it is like to take the assessment, and how parents can support their child.
At Winton Woods City Schools, MAP testing is administered in the fall, winter, and spring. Below you will find our information on our fall assessments. Students will receive additional information from their homeroom teacher (Grades 1-4) or their English/Language Arts teacher (Grades 5-10).

MAP Remote Testing- Answers to Frequently Asked Questions
Please be sure to visit Virtual Learning student website for the most up to date information on MAP Growth Remote testing
What is MAP Growth?
MAP Growth (Measures of Academic Progress) is a computer-adaptive test created by NWEA (Northwest Evaluation Association), which Winton Woods students take three times (Fall, Winter, Spring) per school year. The results provide teachers with information to help them deliver appropriate content for each student and determine each student’s academic growth over time.
What does it mean to be computer adaptive?
Computer-adaptive tests adjust to each student’s learning level, providing a unique set of test questions based on their responses to previous questions. As the student responds to questions, the test responds to the student, adjusting up or down in difficulty.
What does MAP Growth measure?
MAP Growth measures what students know, regardless of their grade level. It also measures growth over time, allowing you to track your child’s progress throughout the school year and across multiple years.
What types of questions are on MAP Growth tests? Are there sample tests?
The MAP Growth tests include multiple choice, drag-and-drop, and other types of questions. There are Practice Tests available that give students an idea of what the questions look like.
Are there any remote testing support materials designed specifically for parents/caregivers?
MAP Growth Parent Toolkit: The homepage for parents/caregivers wanting to know more about MAP Growth
The Family Guide (available in several languages here), which includes
An overview of MAP Growth.
An explanation of the purpose and design of MAP Growth.
An introduction to the RIT score and how the assessment results are used.
Does my child need a parent to be present during the entire test?
Students should be monitored during the entire test to ensure that they are focused on the test and free of distractions. Students may need assistance with contacting their teachers via the live meeting. Students should have only two tabs open on their devices (the NWEA testing site and the live meeting with the teacher) and should not have other equipment or open tabs, such as a calculator or dictionary, unless specifically instructed by the teacher.
What should my child do to prepare for the MAP Growth test?
Your student’s teacher will contact you about the device set up and accessing the MAP practice test. If you do not receive instructions regarding how to prepare your child/student for the test, please reach out to your child’s teacher.
Will this test count towards their academic grade?
This test will not count toward your student’s academic grade. MAP Growth is designed to help educators figure out what your child/student knows, and what they are ready to learn. It lets educators have a better idea on how to design instruction so that your child/student maximizes their learning potential.
What will the test look like?
We suggest that you watch the videos at NWEA’s Student Resources site. These will give you an idea of what the test experience looks like.
How long will the test take for my child/student to complete?
Most students complete the test in about 50 minutes. In some cases, students may take longer or shorter times to complete the test.
Please allow a few extra minutes for login
Login time can be minimized by ensuring the device is configured properly using https://check.nwea.org/
How will I know when my child/student is done with the test? Will the test tell me when it is done?
When a MAP Growth 2-5 or 6+ test is complete, there is a screen that indicates it has completed. If your child/student is taking the K-2 test, they will see a screen with a dog that says, “good job” and a button that says “end test”. Click this button, and you will then see the final “end of test” screen.
Can my child/student use a calculator during the test?
If the use of a calculator or other assistive device is permitted, the calculator function will be embedded into the test. No additional calculator is needed unless directed by the teacher per a student’s IEP or 504 plan.
What should I do if my child/student runs into technical issues during the test?
Test proctors should be the first point of contact for technical issues that occur during the test. Please communicate with the test proctor via the live meeting. If you have questions outside of the testing window, please contact your student’s teacher by email or their recommended form of communication.
Is there any kind of help that I can give my child/student during the test?
The purpose of the test is to help understand what the student knows and what they are ready to learn. Because outside help makes it harder to figure out how to best help your child/student learn, we strongly suggest that you encourage your child to focus and try their best, but do not assist them with test material.
Is my child/student allowed to take bathroom breaks, or step away from the test at any point?
If you child needs to take a quick bathroom or stretch break, please communicate with the test proctor via the live meeting so the proctor can pause the test. Students can take a break and let the proctor know when they are ready to restart the test.
Do I need to monitor my child/student the whole time?
It is recommended that you stay nearby your student throughout the test to help with technology questions and minimize distractions.
Can my child/student take the test whenever they want?
No. Testing sessions must be proctored live by a Winton Woods employee. Your child’s school or teacher will reach out with your child’s testing schedule.

Dear Winton Woods City Schools Parent/Guardian,
At Winton Woods City Schools, we care deeply about the physical, social-emotional and academic well-being of our students. Your student’s academic progress is a top priority for our teachers. A key component of academic planning this school year will include addressing any unfinished learning that resulted from the school closures last spring.
In order to ensure that your child’s teacher has an accurate look at your child’s strengths
and areas of growth, we will be administering the MAP Growth assessment remotely during the week of September 14, 2020 for students in Grades K-10. We will run a Practice Assessment right after the Labor day holiday (Week of September 8, 2020) to work through any technical challenges.
Parent/Guardian Role in Remote Testing
Confirming that the student’s device is ready for remote testing ahead of the test date and time.
Closing all other applications and silence any alerts or notifications on the device.
Supporting your child with a calm, quiet and distraction-free testing environment.
Talk to your child about the purpose of the test – sample words:
This test is to help your teacher know what areas you are ready to learn next.
You will not know all of the answers and that is okay. Some questions will be easier and some will be harder. Just try your best!
I will not be able to help you with the questions but I can help you if you have trouble with the computer or want to talk to your teacher while you take the test.
Maintaining Test Security and Integrity
Test security and integrity are important to make sure the results are accurate and appropriate next steps for instruction are identified to support the reading and mathematics growth of your child.
No person shall reveal, cause to be revealed, release, cause to be released, reproduce, or cause to be reproduced any secure testing materials through any means or medium including, but not limited to,
electronic, photographic, photocopy, written, paraphrase, or oral assistance. Where use of scratch paper or notes on assistive technology are permitted, such notes need to be destroyed or deleted following the conclusion of testing.
Actively monitor your child during testing (i.e. observing child without distractions or providing answers).
Parents/guardians are prohibited from assisting students on the content of the items on the test unless the assistance has been identified as an approved accommodation or support in an IEP, 504 plan, or English Learner Plan. This test will not affect grades. It is critical that we get an accurate assessment of student strengths and instructional needs.
Prohibit the use of other devices during testing (i.e. cell phones or a calculator, unless it is embedded within the assessment and/or the student has an accommodation in an IEP, 504 plan or English Learner plan.
Adhere to testing timing codes. Students are to test within the timeframes given for each online test.
Communicate directly with the teacher/proctor about any technical difficulties encountered with the test or any other issues experienced during the administration of the test.

PRIORITIZE STUDENT LEARNING AND ENSURE EFFECTIVE TEACHING
Project-based and problem-based learning
High impact teaching and learning strategies - in a digital world
Deeper learning applications embedded
Teacher live streaming of select classes
Recorded lessons
ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS
Students are expected to attend all assigned classes in their schedule.
INSTRUCTION
· GR K-2 – Canvas will be the Learning Management System beginning in early September 2020.
· GR 3-12 – ECHO is the Learning Management System in addition to other software tools.
· The online curriculum will meet the same standards as our Winton Woods City Schools curriculum, but it will not necessarily match the same pacing or activities that are delivered in school buildings.
· Students will have access to courses in all core areas (English language arts, mathematics, sciences, social studies and specials areas).
SCHEDULE
Students follow a daily schedule to complete online learning, assignments, and assessments.
GRADING
Students will earn grades for their work.
CLASSROOM
• Students and teachers will participate in virtual check-in meetings designed to support student course progress and provide opportunities for students to connect with each other.
• Communicate questions and concerns immediately to teachers.
• Students are expected to be in spirit wear or uniform during class time.
• How will you spend your time?
• What resources do you need?
• What can I do to help?
At the end of the day you might ask:
• How far did you get in your learning tasks today?
• What did you discover? What was challenging?
• What could we do to make tomorrow better?
Establish time for quiet, reflection, physical activity and exercise: Being intentional about your student’s health is vital and wellbeing for learning.

Winton Woods City Schools will follow state and local guidance as well as the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) regarding extra-curricular activities. Contact the activities director for more information regarding your specific activity.
Winton Woods City Schools transportation department will continue to provide transportation for our Scarlet Oaks student as well as non-public and community school students.
DISTRICTS MUST BE AGILE
Virtual learning would occur for the first semester, at that time the district will evaluate the current situation with COVID-19 and determine whether or not the students will return to the school buildings for face to face instruction. Meals will continue to be provided in the same manner as they were this past spring to ensure the nutritional health and safety of our students. Staff members will be expected to be present in the buildings daily to provide virtual learning experiences for students.
The following is offered by the “Reset and Restart Education Ohio” planning guide on page 4:
Operating Assumptions
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Ohio Department of Health indicate that COVID-19 will be present at the start of the 2020-2021 academic year. Also, as has been the experience over the past several months, conditions can change rapidly. District and school planning will need to contemplate various contingencies. As a result, this planning guide operates under the following assumptions:
· Ohio’s education system must be nimble, flexible and responsive to ensure the health and safety of all students and adults.
· Schools will need to have the capacity to operate in various modes at different times and, sometimes, with minimum advance notice.
· When schools are operating with students in the building, they will need to adhere to health and safety guidelines set forth by the Ohio Department of Health and local health departments. Guidelines may change as circumstances change, which most likely should lead to course corrections throughout the year.
· The traditional school experience as it was known prior to the onset of the pandemic will be different, as will many of the day-to-day practices of schools.
