STAINED GLASS Course Description

Credit: 1/2 Fine Art Level: Grade: 10-12

Prerequisite: Art 1 Course Length: Semester

Description of Major Units of Study: This Foundational course is hands-on where students will learn the basic skills including glass cutting, grinding, and soldering following the copper foil method derived by L.C. Tiffany. Some glass for the individual designs may have to be purchased by the student depending on the availability. All tools and necessary equipment will be provided for use. This course is for the student who likes a “hands-on” experience.

Text and Materials: Textbook: Exploring Visual Design, handouts, visual examples

Expectations: Homework, drawings, group discussions / critiques, and reading will be assigned throughout the course. Students will be asked to think critically to solve specific visual problems and try new approaches to art. Daily participation and good attendance are expected.

Important Safety Precautions for Stained Glass Class

The following practices will help protect you from glass and glass dust, solder and flux, and soldering irons. We are literally breaking glass with our bare hands and working with molten lead. Follow these practices during each class.

CLOTHING:

  1. Wear eye protection.

  2. Wear long sleeves and long pants.

  3. Wear closed toed shoes.

  4. Wear an apron.

  5. Pull long hair back (suggested).

  6. Wear disposable gloves when handling chemicals (flux, patina).


VENTILATION:

  1. Solder in a well-ventilated area. We will open windows and use a fan.
