Hello WGS Remote Families, September 18, 2020
We made it through the first week of remote learning! I have loved hearing that students are enjoying being able to see each other, that the technology hiccups are starting to dissipate, and that students are happy to be back to school in this virtual setting. I can tell you that our teachers are happy to be back too.
Next Thursday, September 24th, Curriculum Extensions (CEs) will begin. These lessons are designed by the same CE teachers the students would have at the grade school and are meant to engage your children in more than just core subjects. Homeroom remote teachers will share information with each of their classes on how to access these activities each day. Below is a quick message from each CE teacher:
Feel free to reach out with any questions and have a wonderful weekend!

Hello Winthrop Grade School Families, September 2020
Welcome to remote learning 2020!
I am thrilled to announce that we will have three, entirely remote teachers, who are already familiar with Winthrop and the grade school. Laura Trask will be teaching students in kindergarten and first grade, Hilary Pottle will be working with second and third graders, and Alison Prescott will be teaching fourth and fifth grade remote learners.
These teachers will be working collaboratively to provide an engaging virtual environment that utilizes the same research-based programming that in-person teaching at WGS does. This includes the Lucy Calkins workshop curriculum for reading (K-5), writing (K-5), and phonics (K-2) along with Envision Math 2.0 (K-5). Curriculum Extensions will also be offered daily, and on a rotating basis, to our remote learners. Like our in-person learners, remote lessons will occur Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. On Wednesday, students will receive a message from their remote teacher, prompting them to complete a small assignment or to check in. A response to this, before noon, will count as student attendance for that day.
Individual teachers have developed schedules to provide structure and expectations for their virtual learners which contain both synchronous (live) and asynchronous (pre-prepared) activities and lessons. All virtual classrooms will begin each day at 9:00am with a “live” morning check-in where attendance will be taken and students will have the opportunity to greet each other. Afterwards teachers will focus on ELA instruction, while providing practice and offering feedback to their remote students. A midday break is then scheduled for lunch and movement. Students will then reconvene for math instruction, flex time, and curriculum extensions in the afternoon.
We are excited to offer you an entirely virtual program designed to help all WGS remote learners grow, learn and interact digitally.
We can’t wait to “see” your kids next week,
Meagan White
