Course Description:
Why are humans drawn to form social groupings? What are the major elements of culture? How do changes in society and culture affect behavior at the societal and individual level? Students will learn how their place in society can be studied. Students will be able to learn about the field of sociology, and compare previous works in the field to themselves.

Eckert, P. (1989). Jocks and Burnouts: Social Categories and Identity in the High School. Teacher College, Colombia University
Materials:
Students are required to bring their computer, textbook (if given), pencil/pen, paper, and a folder/binder with them to class each day.
Communication:
The best way to get in touch with Mr. Livingston is via email at alivingston@winthropschools.org. Mr. Livingston will do his best to respond to emails in a timely manner, but please note that he will not be regularly checking emails on the weekends. Mr. Livingston will also keep up, to the best of his ability, a Google Sites page, Google Classroom, and PowerSchool. The preferred way to contact Mr. Livingston to get extra help is through email; however the best time to get extra help or pop in is 7:15-7:30am or 2:00-2:30pm. Mr. Livingston may be available before or after those times as scheduled by appointment.

Academic Policies:
Students are expected to turn in work on time. Late work will only be accepted for two weeks (including non-school days) past the deadline. Ten points will be taken off the final grade for that assignment, for each Class Period that it is late.* Students are expected to seek out information they do not have, or help they need. Students are expected to do their own work, and put in their best effort.
*Except in extenuating circumstances. Please note that Winthrop High School’s policy on make up of missed work is as follows: For each excused day missed, students will have a cumulative of two (2) days to make up the work from the missed days. A zero will be recorded for the work not made up.
Final Grade calculation:
Class Participation is worth 20%
Homework is worth 10%
Projects are worth 40%
Tests are worth 20%
The Final is worth 10%
Grades will be issued as letter grades as follows:
A+ = 97 - 100 A = 93 - 96 A- = 90 - 92
B+ = 87 - 89 B = 83 - 86 B- = 80 - 82
C+ = 77 - 79 C = 73 - 76 C- = 70 - 72
D+ = 68 - 69 D = 66 – 67 D- = 65
F = 64 and below
Standards
(F4) Developing individual and collaborative community, decisions/plans by considering multiple points of view, weighing pros and cons, building on the ideas of others, and sharing information in an attempt to sway the opinions of others.
(D1) Analyzing and critiquing varying interpretations of historic people, issues, or events, and explain how evidence from primary and secondary sources is used to support and/or refute different interpretations.
(F1) Identifying and critiquing issues characterized by unity and diversity in the history of the United States, and describing their effects, using primary and secondary sources.
