Hello Families of WMS Students,
My name is Mrs. Liz Donovan, and I am your student’s physical education teacher at Winthrop Middle School for his/her/their first quarter special subject. This is my first year working exclusively at WMS as a physical education teacher, but I have worked in the Winthrop School system for more than 20 years in the physical therapy/special education department.
This is my basic outline for my plan for this course in terms of grading, expected behaviors and curriculum to be covered. The sports/skills to be covered are: Soccer, Handball, Volleyball, Basketball, Badminton, Nitroball, Touch/Flag football, Tennis, and/or Pickleball, and some track and field events, in addition to many other games involving scooter boards, parachutes, oversized beach balls and cooperative games/challenges. Additionally, each week will have “Workout Wednesdays” where students will complete various exercises based on the principles of fitness including cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance, muscular strength and flexibility. My goal is for each student to have some fun while they learn some new skills/games and understand the importance of personal fitness. Students will be graded based on their cooperation and participation in each class. The students have heard me repeat many times that respect for me, others in the room and the equipment/gym itself, is the most important rule in my class.
WMS does not require students to change clothing for P.E., but for the sake of safety, Crocs, sport slides/sandals and slippers are not acceptable footwear as they are not meant to be worn while running on a basketball court floor, outdoor tracks, turf fields or tennis courts. The safety of each student is my biggest priority.
Please feel free to email me with questions or concerns at edonovan@winthrop.k12.ma.us .
Regards,
Liz Donovan
