My name is Brianne McGann and I am the science teacher for the Wolves team. This is my seventh year teaching science at Winthrop Middle School. I am very grateful to be a part of this community! I am passionate about education and hope to assist all students in growing their love of learning.
We are excited to share that beginning in the 2026-2027 school year, Winthrop Middle School will begin implementing a new science program called OpenSciEd for grades 6-8. This high-quality, research-based curriculum is aligned with Massachusetts science standards and is designed to help all students deeply engage in science learning through hands-on investigations and collaborative problem-solving.
OpenSciEd uses a “science storyline” approach, where students explore real-word phenomena and work together to answer their own questions, just like scientists do. This accessible model encourages students to talk and think together as they make sense of the world around them.
This year, students in 7th grade will be covering the following topics:
Bath Bombs: How can we make something new that wasn’t there before?
Mystery Illness: How do things inside our body make us feel the way we do?
Maple Syrup: Where does food come from and where does it come next?
Orangutans and Candy Bars: How does changing an ecosystem affect what lives there?
