The Scary Guy on Bullying Part I. (2015). Retrieved, September 30, 2018, from https://www.teachingchannel.org/video/preventing-bullying
(video, at grade level, teacher led and peer supported)
The Scary Guy is a tattooed individual who does look a “little scary”, hence his nickname. He is a motivational speaker who talks to students about taking responsibility for their behavior, using his unconventional appearance to reinforce his anti-bullying message. In this video, Scary talks to students at St. Joseph's RC High School about his mission to eliminate hate, violence, and prejudice. The teacher can watch this video with his or her class and lead a class discussion on bullying, individuality, acceptance, society’s definition of beauty, and the beauty of differences.
This video is at grade level and connects to the strong themes in “Wonder”. Just as Jack and others students in Auggie’s class were “scared” of his cranial deformities, so are people “scared” of Scary Guy’s appearance. Students can discuss the complexities of society’s definition of beauty and the importance of individuality and the acceptance of individual differences. This is a complex topic thus students will benefit from a teacher led discussion after viewing the film. This activity addresses AASL National School Library Standards Learner Competencies specifically, “learners exhibit empathy with and tolerance for diverse ideas by: 1. Engaging in informed conversation and active debate. 2. Contributing to discussions in which multiple viewpoints on a topic are expressed”. Students will discuss society’s definition of beauty and will learn more about the beauty of the world’s differences. Students will hear from multiple viewpoints and will discuss how harmful it is to judge someone based on their appearance. Students will engage in a discussion utilizing the “The Scary Guy” and August in “Wonder” as examples.
