(class activity, at grade level, teacher led and peer supported).
Wonder’s “Certified Choose Kind Classroom Challenge” is a nationwide program that promotes kindness. Educators can sign up online and print out the label for their classroom jar. Students are encouraged to commit acts of kindness and add one marble to the jar for each kind deed they do. Once the jar is filled with marbles, the teacher will take a picture of the kindness jar to upload to the website. The class will be entered into a drawing to potentially win $500 for their class and a bevy of goodies and each class will receive a certificate that certifies the class a “kind class”. Students can view their class on the website among other classes on the map who have also been certified kind. This is a great class activity for students to connect to the book’s overall theme of “choosing kind”. Students will be encouraged to commit acts of kindness and they can also see other classes across the United States participating as well.
This activity connects to the AASL National School Library Standards Learner Competencies which states, “learners exhibit empathy with and tolerance for diverse ideas by engaging in informed conversation and active debate”. By participating in this activity they will learn to exhibit empathy and tolerance by committing acts of kindness throughout their communities. Students will be able to see the impact they can make through their actions and connect the text to their own lives.
