Participants

A participant is defined as an individual or team not to exceed four people, except where specifically provided in certain competitions. All participants are students in grades K-12. While we appreciate parent support in Winston Science events, the primary focus is on the participant's work in order to ensure authentic engagement by the student.

By registering in a Winston Science event, all participants agree to allow photos of themselves and their events to be used in various publications by The Winston School. In addition, parents and/or teacher chaperones agree to accept responsibility for their students and to properly supervise them before, during, and after the events on The Winston School campus.

All participants will receive verification of their participation in Winston Science to serve as documented proof of their involvement.

Competitions and SciShops

COMPETITIONS

Competitions require advance research and preparation as outlined in the individual event guidelines. The competition format allows for students to complete a project of personal interest at home and bring it to campus for judging by Winston School faculty. Unless otherwise specified, ALL work should be completed before arrival at the competition site. All competitions will award a first, second, and third place entry in each grade division and winners will receive a ribbon at the official awards ceremony designated for that competition.

SciShops - NEW FOR 2019!

New, to Winston Science 2019, participants can register for on-site experiential workshops to expand their interest in different design-based and hands-on scientific fields. This format allows students to immerse themselves in the scientific learning process and maker-based thinking without the need for advanced preparation. All SciShops will be facilitated by highly-qualified Winston School faculty members with materials and equipment provided.

Awarding of Prizes

Award ceremonies will be held in the Center for the Arts on The Winston School campus at the time designated on the event schedule page. All contestants are encouraged to stay for the awards ceremony. Judges may award more than one first place, second place, third place or honorable mention. Awards will only be distributed for competition events. (*SciShops will not be judged and therefore not recognized in the award ceremonies).

Winners must be present at the designated awards ceremony to receive their award. A representative from a winning school may collect awards for students who are unable to collect their awards in person; however, awards will NOT be mailed to winning students unable to attend the awards ceremony or held for pick-up.

Parent and Family Involvement

Winston Science is a student-focused event. Due to space limitations, some competitions may not be viewable by an audience. Parents and family members are encouraged to relax in the cafeteria and enjoy the cafe provided by The Winston School student government.

Competitions held in the gymnasium are open to the public, but parents and family members are respectfully requested to remain in the bleachers to allow student competitors to fully demonstrate their entry. Other competition areas may have limited seating, but parents and family members must remain outside of the evaluation zone to ensure students are the sole presenters of their work.
