Staff at Winfield city Schools meet on a frequent and regular basis to review the work being done at the school as well as to plan ways to improve the STE(A)M experiences offered to our students. During these meetings, the focus is to enhance teachers' pedagogical knowledge and practice with the latest educational technologies. Teachers throughout the building meet together to review and refine school procedures and protocols.
We began the process of collaboration for STEM implementation ten years ago as we developed and transitioned into the 1:1 initiative. Varying members of our faculty, administration, and board made school visits to determine the best route for our school to travel to ensure both the success of the initiative as well as a smooth transition for all involved. Those visiting other schools or attending professional development would return to our school and present their discoveries to our home faculty. This same approach has been followed as we made the decision to pursue STEM certification.
Common planning time has been established in order to allow teachers the opportunity to collaborate, plan, and adjust integrated STE(A)M learning experiences. In addition to daily common planning time, vertical and horizontal planning and learning rounds occur periodically throughout the year. The results of these meetings are evidenced in many cross-curricular projects and activities that also include multi-level grades.
Both district and building administration value continuing education and professional development. School visits, both locally and in other states, have provided our teachers in multiple grade levels the opportunity to learn from various top school districts. Additionally, we have brought professional development to our home campus, as well as have our teachers provide professional development to each other and other schools around the state.
