Kids with ADHD have a very hard time focusing, which leads to difficulty surrounding schoolwork. A big factor that can impact these kid’s ability to focus is food. According to kidshealth.org, children with ADHD are driven to more fat laden foods which does not help their brain focus.
On top of that, Michelle Richman, a specialist in ADHD, told us that when kids eat foods with tons of sugar it can spike their mood and throw off their attention spans. A student at windward struggling with ADHD who prefers to remain anonymous also shared that sweets and candy makes them shut down.
Foods impacts a lot on how people with ADHD do and how they feel. It’s a big struggle for them because they want to manage what they eat because they don’t want to have too much energy but also not wanting to have too little energy. Giving them unhealthily relationships to food. It’s hard to be aware of what you are eating because you want to eat that food so bad. Foods like sweets (cookies, pastries, etc) and candy can make them turn off.
People with ADHD have lower dopamine. When people with ADHD get hungry their dopamine levels get higher. Once they eat their dopamine level gets higher. Once they are finished eating it drops rapidly causing them to get unfocused.
All of this information has led us to conclude that kids with ADHD and their schoolwork are greatly effected by foods that they eat, and we would like to be a part of the change to fix that.
