The following are questions that we hear quite frequently in the counseling department.
The following are questions that we hear quite frequently in the counseling department.
Does WHS offer tutoring?
There are several different ways that students can receive extra help.
Core area teachers have office hours during the first shift of OWL time on certain days of the week. This is a great time for students to receive extra help and/or make-up work or tests. There is always a teacher from one of the core subject areas available each day.
Homework Lab is available after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays until 4:00pm in the library. Activity buses are available, but students must sign up for it ahead of time.
A+ tutors are available in some of the classes for extra help.
What testing does my student participate in?
There are several opportunities
NWEA testing monitors students' progress in the areas of Mathematics, Reading, and Language Usage. Students are tested in the Fall, Winter, and Spring of each year for our freshmen and sophomores.
End of Course (EOC) Exams are required by the state of Missouri in the following subject areas: Algebra 1, English 2, Biology, and American Government. Students will take these exams at the end of the year that they are enrolled in the course.
All juniors are eligible to take the ACT for free in March of each year. Communication will be sent to students and parents before the test date.
All other testing options can be found on WHS College and Career Center
We are new to the district. What is the process in enrolling my child at WHS?
Call the school at 636-464-4429 and ask to speak with Rochelle Scott, our registrar.
She will walk you through all the steps to get registered through Infinite Campus.
A counselor will be in contact with you to set up a meeting, once all the proper documents are received and registration has been completed. At the meeting, a schedule will be made and/or provided and a tour of the building will take place.
I'm concerned about my child's grades. What are the steps I should follow?
Talk with your student about your concerns and see what the student has to say about the situation.
Reach out to your child's teachers that you are having concerns with. The easiest way to do this is via email.
Reach out to your child's counselor to see if they can meet with your student to offer support.
Continue to check Infinite Campus, talk to your student, and communicate with your child's teachers!
When will scheduling take place for next school year?
For current 8th grade students who will be entering the high school next year:
Counselors will visit WMS at the beginning of February to talk about the high school experience and present class materials to students.
An 8th grade parent night will be held after this at the high school where counselors and principals will present information.
Counselors will visit WMS again to work on ICAPs with students and pick elective courses for students' freshman year.
For current 9th & 10th grade students:
Counselors will visit classrooms in early February to review ICAPs with students and present course materials.
Counselors will sit one-on-one with students to select courses for the next school year and make sure students are on track to graduate.
For current 11th grade students:
Mrs. Reed will be scheduling one-on-one meetings with each student. Parents are more than welcome to join!
Plans for senior year and post-high school will be discussed. Registration for classes for next school year will occur in this meeting.
What credits do I need to graduate?
The short answer is 24 credits. Each semester class is a half credit. Students have the potential to earn 7 credits within each school year (not counting summer school).
Check out the Academic Planning page of this website for the Course Booklet. This will provide a full breakdown of the credits and what is recommended for the college track.
How does the counseling department communicate with students and families?
Students have access to a Google Classroom with their graduation cohort. Announcements for the class are posted here.
A newsletter is sent out weekly to parents and students.
Social Media platforms include a Facebook page (Windsor High School Counseling Department), Twitter (@areedWHS), and the Remind app.
How do I get my transcripts?
If you applied to a school and they need your transcript, use your SCOIR account.
If you applied through Common App, send Mrs. Reed an email at areed@windsorc1.com.
If you are needing it for scholarships or other things, please contact your counselor or Mrs. Scott at rscott@windsorc1.com.
As a student, how should I make an appointment to talk to my counselor?
The easiest way is to email us! Send us an email letting us know that you would like to meet and let us know what the meeting is about.
If at all possible, do not just stop in the office. There are many moving parts to the counseling office and a counselor may not always be available at the drop of a hat.
I've heard some of the following terms. What do they mean?
ICAP (Individual Career & Academic Plan) - A document that is started in the 8th grade and updated annually, which reviews an individual student's career goals/path and what courses they can take at the high school level to help them get there. It is a requirement in the state of Missouri that every student complete and update this annually.
Core Classes - These include classes in the areas of English, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Other classes are considered electives. All available classes can be seen in the Course Booklet on the Academic Planning page.
Core 42 - These are the 42 credit hours of core classes that colleges and universities require of their students to graduate. Many students can complete these 42 credit hours at a community college and then transfer to a university if so desired. For more information, check out the WHS College and Career Center page.
A+ Program - Scholarship program that provides funds to attend participating public community college or vocational/technical school. There is a list of criteria that must be met and can be found on the WHS College and Career Center page.
Dual Credit - A high school class that students can also take for college credit. Full a full list of dual credit classes, see the Course Booklet on the Academic Planning page.
ATS Program - This is the Area Technical School that is run through Jefferson College. Students who are enrolled attend JeffCo half of the day and then WHS the other half. For more information, check out their website Jefferson College ATS .
