College application season is one of the most exciting and stressful times for students and their families. You hit the submit button, your heart is racing and your palms are probably a little sweaty. Cue the confetti, you did the hardest part. Gathering all your documents, writing essays, personal statements, creating your brag sheet and asking for letters of recommendations. It's A LOT of work.
But now what? It's a waiting game. And we are all hoping for that same response....CONGRATULATIONS! You are admitted! But there are actually 3 different decisions you might receive from the college. Admitted, Deferred or Denied. What do each mean?
Admitted: This one is probably pretty self explanatory. You have been accepted and offered admission to the college. You CELEBRATE and maybe even cry a little. I highly recommend grabbing and ice cream cone!
Deferred: Deferred is not a "No." Deferred means the college would like to see a little bit more information from you. Typically the college will be very clear as to what additional information they need. The college may ask for things like: Grades in Progress, additional testing (ACT/SAT), additional letters of support, or a personal statement explaining why you want to be admitted to their institution.
Denied: Denied means, unfortunately you were not a match for the current incoming college class. There are times we don't know the "WHY" behind the college decision. I know this decision is never the one you hope for. But it is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. (Still go get an ice cream!) Each school year, colleges look at every application in reference to what they are trying to achieve on their campus. They may be trying to grow a particular degree program or demographic. They may be seeking to recruit students from different areas of the state or country.
But do not be disheartened. If you get DENIED from your TOP choice school, you still have options! On more than one occasion, I have helped students create a plan and a path to REVERSING that decision. (This doesn't always work!) But if it's your TOP choice, it's worth a try.
If you disagree with an admissions decision you can take the following steps to see if you can convince the college to reverse your decision. Treat your DENIED much like a DEFERRED. Create a packet of information including:
Updated grades
Official transcripts (high school and college)
Write a personal statement to admissions explaining the reason why attending this particular college is so important to you.
Ask for additional letters of support. Having an alumni write a letter is always helpful.
This last step isn't required, but if THIS school is truly your DREAM and you are willing to do ANYTHING to get in, GO to the college and drop off your package in person. You would be amazed at the response you will receive when making a personal visit. You literally are "going the extra mile!"
Always remember, College Admission is not a contest to be won. The college admission requirements are ever changing and many times have moving parts that we can't predict or understand. This is why applying to multiple colleges is so important. Know that I truly believe there is a GREAT place for every student to continue their education after high school!
