I bet you've heard that question before, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" Teachers and parents as early as Kindergarten start asking students this question. At that age, we typically see things like Professional Athlete, Teacher, Doctor, Lawyer, Fireman, Police Officer... But now that the time is actually getting nearer to choosing a college major and truly settling in on a career, the question becomes almost stressful. No longer can you wistfully just through out a job that looks fun and sounds cool. It's becoming REAL! It's like forever is staring you in the face and you aren't quite sure how to answer it anymore. What do you really see yourself doing (for the foreseeable future) that you would actually enjoy doing and also, make some money?
There are so many college options out there. It can be as intimidating as the menu at Starbucks. What major? What college? What state? Big city or smaller city? Do you want a school with athletics? Or a great Arts program?
There are some things you need to consider when choosing your college major that will prepare you for your future career.
What are you interested in?
How long do you want to be in school?
What are your future goals?
What is the earning potential for careers that require this major?
What skills do you wish to learn?
I encourage you to sit with each of these questions and really think about them. Journal or brainstorm ideas, talk to people in fields that you might be interested in to learn about their path.
Luckily I have a FREE resource that I highly encourage you to use! At CFNC you can take an Interest Inventory. This "personality quiz" can help you identify key areas where you are naturally strong. The reason I love this particular resource so much is how it CONNECTS you! The information will tell you, "based on your responses, you would be good in this career field." "This career field requires _____________ major." "This major can be found at _______ NC Colleges."
All you need to access the quiz is a CFNC account. Don't have one yet? It's easy to create. Plus it's a BONUS to be able to learn how to navigate the site now, prior to your Senior year.
