Congratulations to Mrs. Carlena Bynum!
Wilson County Schools CTE Teacher of the Year
and Wilson County Schools Teacher of the Year!
CONGRATULATIONS to Fike High Teacher Carlena Bynum for being named both the 2026-2027 Wilson County Schools Teacher of the Year and the 2026-2027 Career & Technical Education (CTE) Teacher of the Year!!!
She was surprised by the news today! Ms. Bynum has served as a Health Science Teacher at Fike High for the past six years. Before entering the education field, she spent 30 years as a Registered Nurse at Wilson Medical Center. Her background in healthcare and lifelong commitment to the profession continue to enrich her teaching and inspire her passion for preparing students not just to graduate, but to become responsible, compassionate, and capable leaders who are ready to thrive in life, work, and their communities.
Ms. Bynum is an exceptional educator with a remarkable ability to connect with students, foster a genuine love of learning, and inspire academic excellence. Under her guidance, students have achieved an impressive 95% success rate in earning industry-level certifications in her Health Science courses, a powerful reflection of her high expectations, innovative instruction, and commitment to student success. Beyond the classroom, she coordinates Fike’s annual blood drive, is the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) adviser, the Chair of the CTE Department, mentors other teachers, and is a member of the School Improvement Team.
After being surprised, Ms. Bynum shared these words with students, staff, district leaders, and her family, “To my students in Health Science and HOSA, I truly, truly love all of you - even if you’re not in my class. I’m grateful to be your teacher and for you listening to me. I want to thank the administration at Fike and everyone here. I truly appreciate you, and I will represent Wilson County Schools and serve with compassion.”
Special thanks to Wilson Education Partnership for partnering with WCS on the surprise event! WCS and WEP both presented Ms. Bynum with cash prizes totaling $1,500. Huge thanks to Vester Auto Group for providing Ms. Bynum with a one-year lease of a new Honda Accord, and Morkos and Molly Youssef (owners of several local restaurants) for gifting her $1,000. WaWa and the Wilson Warbirds also provided gifts. Current Teacher of the Year Shannon Campbell also “passed the sash” to Ms. Bynum. She will now advance to the regional level of the statewide Teacher of the Year competition AND the statewide CTE Teacher of the Year competition!
