Amber Walsh

School Social Worker

The WASD school social worker works to provide direct and indirect services to students, families and school personnel to strengthen and support students' academic and social successes. The school social worker is responsible for supporting students and advocating for their social, emotional and physical well-being. The school social worker provides, organizes and connects families and students to individual, group and family counseling, as well as intensive behavioral services to help overcome the obstacles that affect performance, behavior, and socialization in the school and home environment. School social workers work in collaboration with the school staff to enhance the understanding and implementation of interventions to help students overcome emotional and behavioral challenges. The ultimate goal of a school social worker involves helping students in the WASD address obstacles that may get in the way of learning and competence, such as truancy, rebelliousness, social withdrawal, substance abuse, bullying, and sexuality.  The School social worker can also be used to access an outside psychiatrist, as well as assist with scheduling and understanding diagnoses that may impact the child's learning.
