Alum '70
Died on February 10, 2024William Stanford Davis '70, recently of Lansdowne, VA, passed at the age of 71, following a 7-year long battle with Lewy Body Dementia.
William was born on December 3, 1952, to William Benjamin and Virginia Mason Kennady Davis of Wilmington, Delaware. He graduated from the Wilmington Friends School in 1970 and then obtained a degree from Duke University’s Stanford School of Public Policy in 1974. While there, he was a Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity brother. After working as a paralegal at (then) Howery & Simon in Washington DC, he went on to obtain a master’s degree in Foreign Policy from the University of Virginia in 1981.
Following graduate school, “Bill” moved to the Washington DC area and worked as an independent consultant in Non-Profit Fundraising and Business Development. From 1986 until his retirement in 2013, he worked for the Central Intelligence Agency as an Intelligence Analyst.
In 1992, he wed Maryann Mueller-Davis. They shared 31 happy years together in McLean, VA and then Lansdowne, VA.
Friends and family loved Bill for his good-natured smile, kindness, and exceptional wit. A sharp intellect and inquisitive nature drove all his pursuits. He was a natural teacher. In his spare time, he was rarely seen without a book on topics ranging from quantum mechanics to WWII tactics and strategy. He was keen for all things Scottish (he had maternal ties to the Scottish MacRae and Kennady clans).
Until his illness, Bill was a natural athlete. He enjoyed regular jogs, swimming laps, and kayaking. To his wife’s dismay, he was also passionate about coffee ice cream in any form. He loved getting together with family in Pennsylvania for the holidays, foreign travel, regular trips to the Chesapeake and Eastern Shore, and watching sunsets with his wife.
William is survived by his wife, and his sister Pamela Davis Northcutt.
A private service was held in Clarks Summit, PA on April 19, 2024. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Bill’s name to the Lewy Body Dementia Association.

Alum '70
Died on December 22, 2023Tim Goertz '70 was born in Jos, Nigeria, January 15, 1952, to Samuel Peter Goertz and Florence Kite Goertz where his parents were missionaries. He graduated from Friends School in Wilmington, Delaware. He had a retail furniture /gift store The Pot-Pouri-Ri 1980-2003. Tim led a Christ-centered life and was one of the Charter members of Brandywine Valley Baptist Church Delaware. His passion was leading others to Jesus, serving, helping others, and encouraging others. He was part of the Stephens Ministry at the church. He was a member of the Monday morning Promise Keepers. He was a worker in the youth group for over 15 years, discipling many teenagers. Tim was a Prayer Warrior keeping in touch with many missionaries, old customers, classmates, and students who he had come in contact with through the years. He had a servant’s heart, always putting others before himself. Eager to help them but especially pray for them. Reminding them that God loved them and wanted a relationship with them.
Surviving him are his wife of 51 years, Esther M Goertz; his son, Rev. Jonathan Goertz and his wife, Erin Cole Goertz; his daughter, Heather Goertz; nieces and nephews, David and Shannon Steele, Daniel and Holley Steele, Sharon and David Schenck, Becky Alderidge, Steve and Jenn Seldomridge, Karen and Ryan Cramer, Jeff Yost, and Jim and Andrea Yost.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Florence Goertz; his stepmother, Burness Goertz; and his sisters, Lois Goertz Steele and Sharon Goertz Seldomridge.
There will be a visitation Saturday 12/30 at 10:00 am, Celebration Service at 11:00 am, followed by a luncheon. All will be at Brandywine Valley Church (7 Mt. Lebanon Rd, Wilmington DE 19803).

Died on January 3, 2023Carol A. McCrery '70, age 70, of West Chester, Ohio, formerly of Wilmington, passed away on January 10, 2023 of Alzheimer's disease. Born in Lewes, Delaware, she was the daughter of the late Dorothy M. McCrery and Albert J. McCrery Jr. '36 of Wilmington. Carol is survived by her sister Nancy McCrery Mumford '63 (Dirk), her brother Albert J. McCrery III '67 (Pamela), her sister Virginia McCrery Strickland '69 (David), and cousins Evelyn Rowe (Don) and Scott McCoy (Kathy). She is also survived by nieces Dorothy Flesta (John) and Lauren McCrery (Aaron Stulman), and nephews Clay Mumford (Kelley), Jesse Mumford (Noel), Andrew Strickland (Christine), Albert J. McCrery IV (Megan) and 9 great nieces and nephews. Carol was a graduate of Wilmington Friends School, the University of Delaware with a Bachelor’s of Science in Home Economics with honors, and a cum laude graduate of Wesley College of Nursing. Carol was also a member of Kappa Delta Pi education honor society while at the University of Delaware. Carol's career included working as an RN and for McCrery Funeral Home. In her leisure she enjoyed raising her Labrador retrievers, needlepoint, gardening, reading and cooking. By far Carol's favorite activity was spending time with her nieces and nephews. A service will be held at 11AM on Saturday, January 21, 2023 at McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike with visitation beginning at 10AM. Alum '70; Sibling of Alumus ('62)
Died on July 27, 2027It is with great sadness that I'm sharing news of the passing of our classmate and friend, Barbara Vernon Schwan '70. 'BV' fought multiple cancers for twelve years and all that time she chose to remain positive and focus on the bright side of life.
Barbara arrived at WFS in the 7th grade and immediately became actively engaged in school activities. She loved participating in Violet Richman's musicals, enjoyed being the captain of the cheerleading squad, decorating for Prom, and was often found surrounded by classmates 'hanging out' in the lobby -her laugh could be heard down the hall. Barbara had family connections at WFS. Her sister Marybeth 'Miss Vernon', taught French, coached field hockey and was a student advisor while brother Norman, 'Norm', graduated with the class of '62.
Barb went on to graduate from Baldwin-Wallace College before entering a financial career on Wall Street. It was in NYC where Barb met her husband Ron, of 43 years. They raised two sons, Andrew (decd.) and Zachary, while living in NJ. As a fulltime mom, Barbara again became engaged in school programs and championed numerous causes for disabled persons. Eventually, their four grandchildren would become a never-ending source of joy.
A few years ago, she and Ron, decided to become fulltime residents of Florida, and moved to Longboat Key, so BV could conveniently walk to the beach- her 'place of solitude and joy'. She again became actively involved in the community despite on-going illnesses. Barbara was quickly becoming a respected watercolorist, painting beach scenes of birds and sea-life. Barbara's zest for life, despite its many setbacks, is an example for all.

Died on May 5, 2024Donald Wakeman Foster '72, 69 of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 5, 2024 at home with his wife, Shelley and daughter, Lindsay at his bedside following long and courageous battles with Alzheimer’s Disease and Leukemia.
Don was born in 1954 in Wilmington to parents Ralph and Shirley Foster. He attended Wilmington Friends School where he excelled as a three-sport athlete (lettering in baseball, basketball and captaining the football team). He went on to play basketball and golf at Princeton University where he earned a prestigious white sweater for captaining the 1976 Ivy League Champion golf team. Don was undefeated at #1 and carded a hole-in-one at the NCAA Golf Championship. He remained a highly competitive, low single-digit handicap golfer at the Wilmington Country Club after his collegiate career.
Although earning his Princeton degree in Engineering, Don enjoyed a prolific career in the insurance industry. In addition to being a loving, supportive, and exceptionally caring husband and father, Don thoroughly valued his time spent at the Wilmington Country Club on the golf course, and squash and paddle courts with his friends. Notably he won the Men’s Club Championship at the WCC in 1984 and 1985 as well as the National Golf Links of America Singles Invitational in Southampton, NY in 1981.
Don was predeceased by his father, Ralph Foster, stepfather Lewis Bancroft, and mother, Shirley Simonton Foster Bancroft '47. He is survived and will be greatly missed by his loving wife Shelley, beloved daughter Lindsay, four sisters (Fay Foster Felty '75, Patty Foster Fosselman '75), three brothers (Thomas 'Ned' Bancroft '81, Jay Bancroft '84), two nieces and seven nephews.
Our family sends special thanks to all extended relatives and friends who have been so supportive during this very difficult time. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 22, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Lower Brandywine Presbyterian Church located at 101 Old Kennett Road, Wilmington, DE 19807. Burial will be private.

Died on December 24, 2023Ian E. Harrington (WFS1973) died suddenly of natural causes at his home in Wayland, MA on December 24, 2023. He is survived by his wife Holly Lapp, son Ellery (Kerry) Harrington and three grandchildren of Shrewsbury, MA, sister Barbara Harrington Murphy (WFS1971) of Glendale, AZ, and brother Eric Harrington (ex.WFS1977) of Cambridge, MA. After graduation from Friends School, Ian attended and graduated with a bachelor's degree from Princeton University, and later received a master’s degree from MIT. He worked in transportation planning in the Boston metropolitan area. Ian was very active at the Friends Meeting in Cambridge, MA.

Southborough – Karl Leonard Sparre, 67, of Southborough, passed away at his home on Tuesday, June 6, 2023, surrounded by his family who loved him dearly. Born in Kinston, North Carolina, he was the devoted son of Madeline (Rich) and Robert Hicks Sparre '36.
Karl was the loving husband of 28 years to Katherine (Kelley) Sparre of Southborough. Karl adored his wife. They shared a loving and devoted relationship and truly cherished each moment together.
Karl’s passion for life was infectious. He was an exceptional gardener who created a wonderful palette of colors and textures in his numerous gardens. He was a lifelong runner, enjoyed hiking and sporting events of all kinds, and took enormous pleasure in sharing these activities with dear friends. He loved watching his children compete in their respective sports and never missed an event; he was their biggest supporter. He was a diehard fan of the New England Patriots and loved supporting the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. His happy place was always with his family, and he looked forward all year to his family vacation on the beaches in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, his place of bliss.
He graduated from Colgate University in 1977 and was an active, proud alumnus. Karl was an avid student of history and a voracious reader of military non-fiction. He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. Karl thoroughly enjoyed his forty-five-year career in Retail Buying and Human Resources/Talent Acquisition that spanned many industries, specialties, and states. He was a true leader and took immense pride in his work, his teams, and his relationships. It was those relationships that fueled him to do his best work every day and inspire others to do the same.
Besides his wife, Karl is survived by his children, who he adored, Christopher Vaillant and his wife Julie of Holliston, MA, and Nina Sparre of Chicago, IL. His children felt his immense love and support every day. He also leaves behind his sister, Helena “Trina” Damico, and her partner Lee Gootee of Maryland and her late husband Paul Damico of Delaware, mother-in-law Mary Kelley of Hudson, MA, and his two precious grandchildren, Brooke and Connor Vaillant of Holliston, MA.
Visitation will be held on Monday, June 12th from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the Chesmore Funeral Home, 57 Hayden Rowe St., Hopkinton, MA. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 13th at 10:00 a.m. at Saint Matthew’s Parish, 26 Highland Street in Southborough, MA.

Alum '76
Died on November 30, 2022Thomas E. George '76, DMD, FAGD, of Allentown, PA passed away on November 30, 2022 after a long, heroic battle with prostate cancer. His wife, Cheryl, exemplified love, courage and support through their entire journey. At his passing, Tom was blessed with the company of close family members. His niece, Lauren Lagrow, MS, PA-C, made extraordinary efforts to provide comfort and care for her "Uncle Tom" during his final days and moments.
Tom was born in Idaho Falls, ID on July 12, 1958 and raised there until the age of four. He attended Wilmington Friends School from K through 12. After graduating from Bowdoin College with a degree in Biology, Tom excelled at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine and received his DMD degree in 1984. After completing a two-year General Practice Residency, he remained in dental school as full-time faculty for two years. Afterwards, he became Director of the General Practice Residency in advanced dental training at the Graduate Hospital in Philadelphia, where he taught for thirteen years while maintaining a general practice. In 2008, Tom and Cheryl co-founded deme, LLC, which became a successful cosmetic and general dentistry practice in Philadelphia.
Tom was the perfect embodiment of diligence, patience, humility, compassion, charity and love. Reserved and mild in manner, he set the gold standard for how to live a dignified and happy life without regret.
Tom was predeceased by his father, Daniel George, and nephew, Vincent Magnotta. He is survived by his wife, Cheryl Beddoe George, his mother, Sachiko George, his sister, Linda George, his son Freddy Robinson (Annie Robinson), his grandson, Chase Robinson, and many nieces and nephews.

Died on March 11, 2022JACKSONVILLE, FL – Dr. Lisa Maureen Petty '76, 63, received her wings on Friday, March 11, 2022 after a lengthy illness.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, March 26, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. at New Garden Friends Cemetery, 801 New Garden Road, Greensboro, NC.
Lisa was born on September 19, 1958 in New York City, New York to Hester S. Petty and the late Leon E. Petty.
Lisa was educated at Wilmington Friends School in Wilmington, Delaware, Mary Baldwin University in Staunton, Virginia, and Sherman College of Chiropractic in Spartanburg, South Carolina where she received her doctorate degree.
Lisa enjoyed art, dogs, reading and traveling; but music was her main interest. She spent a lot of time traveling and was fortunate to visit several countries. Lisa was loved by all the people who encountered her.
In 2019, she was preceded in death by her father Dr. Leon Emandus Petty.
Lisa leaves to cherish her memory, mother, Hester Stephens Petty; sister, Dr. Leonora K. Petty '66; uncle, Frank Petty; aunt, Patricia Petty, both of Delaware, Alma Stevenson of South Carolina and Marie Strickland of Delaware; bonus families, Jie Zhang, Jian Zhang, Jasmine Zhang, John Zhang and Donald and Laura Owens; a host of other relatives and friends.

Died on April 29, 2023It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Alexandra Poorman Ergon '77 of Lewes, Delaware on December 10, 2024 surrounded by her loving family.
Alex was a woman of deep faith. Acute pneumonia tragically took her from this world to meet God, a journey she embraced with peace and without fear. She had an iron will, brilliant mind, and generous heart. May we all find her strength in ourselves when we need it, and choose to live life to the fullest in honor of her.
Born at home in Avondale, Pennsylvania, Alexandra had a diverse and enriching upbringing. In her early teens, she attended Escola Graduada in São Paulo, Brazil and travelled to the Amazon, Machu Pichu, Iguacu Falls, and scores of beaches across South America. She returned to the United States to finish high school at Wilmington Friends School. Alexandra earned her BA and MBA degrees from Emory University. She also earned a Chartered Financial Analyst certificate.
Alex was an experience curator, expending great effort in creating travel and other experiences for those she loved. She was an epicurean, enjoying bird watching, spreading her love through cooking, getting a great tan at the beach, volunteering, spoiling her children, grandchildren and dogs.
Alexandra lived for her family. Her memory will be cherished by her partner Michael Skibicki; her two children: Elliott Ergon ex.'10 (Danielle Matton) of Denver, Colorado and Porter Rothman '12 (Mark) of Denver, Colorado; Michael’s daughter Blaise Skibicki of Hawaii; her granddaughter Penelope Lille Ergon; her parents Eleanor [Alexander] '53 and Joel Poorman of Wilmington, Delaware; her two brothers: Jeffrey Poorman '78 (Anne) of Bronxville, New York and Bradley Poorman '76 (Beth) of Naples, Florida; her sister Martha Tschantz '85 (Jay) of Wilmington Delaware; her nine nieces and nephews: Spencer (Anisha Chopra) Poorman of Brooklyn, New York, Carrie (Ashley) Hall MD of Atlanta, Georgia, Greg (Laura Katz) Poorman of Larchmont, New York, Garrett (Tielly) Poorman of Miami Florida, Sloane Poorman of Naples, Florida, Alec Poorman of Miami Florida, Dwyer Tschantz '13 (Erin) of Traverse City, Michigan, Margo Tschantz '15 of New York, New York, and Mason Tschantz '19 of Boston, Massachusetts; and her former husband Paul Ergon of Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Alexandra had a distinguished career in financial services, serving as Director of Investment Strategy at Smith Barney Consulting Group, Portfolio Manager at Dupont Capital, and Director of Investment Product Management at Mission Square Retirement. She worked in a variety of roles in institutional investment management, where she earned the respect and admiration of colleagues and clients alike.
Alexandra’s influence extended far beyond her professional life. She was elected to the vestry and served as a Eucharistic Minister at Christ Church. She served as a board member and president of the Children’s Beach House in Lewes Delaware. Alexandra also served as a member of the alumni board of Wilmington Friends School.
A memorial service in celebration of Alexandra’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, December 19, 2024, at Christ Church Christiana Hundred 505 E. Buck Road, Wilmington Delaware.

Died on April 29, 2023Christopher T. Anderson '79, age 61, passed away peacefully at his home on April 29, 2023.
Chris was born and raised in Wilmington, DE, attending Wilmington Friends School and Alexis I. duPont High School. He then earned his bachelor’s degree in Economics at the University of Virginia, where he also served as golf team captain during his senior year. After college Chris went on to enjoy successful careers as a Professional Golfer and as a Risk Management Advisor at Lyons Companies.
Chris was an accomplished golfer who will be joining his father and former Phillie Harry “The Horse” Anderson in the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame in 2023. His golf career included the Delaware Junior, Delaware Amateur, and two Philadelphia Amateur titles, as well as a record seven Delaware Open Championships. Chris was also named the 1983 Delaware Athlete of the Year and was recognized by Golf Digest as one of the top three golfers of all-time from the State of Delaware. He was a member of the Hogan/Nike Tour, the South African PGA and Canadian PGA Tours, and he qualified for five PGA Tour events during his career, including the 1996 PGA Championship.
Chris was a humble champion, always fun-loving and a good friend to so many. He cherished his time with his family, and most of all with his children as a devoted father. Chris was selfless, kindhearted and enjoyed helping others. He was generous with his time as a supporter of Special Olympics Delaware and as a board member of the Delaware SPCA and First Tee - Delaware. Chris was also proud to be honored by the Variety Club of Philadelphia for developing the Golf Buddy Program, which grew into a national program with other Variety Club Chapters.
Chris was preceded in death by his father, Harry, and is survived by his mother Gail Porter Anderson '56, his son Harry '20, his daughter Lily '22 and their mother Dina '84; his brother Todd '81 (Beth), and their children Ellie '14, Brett and Bo.
Interment will be private. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday June 11, 2023 at 11:30 am at the Wilmington Country Club.
