Our 20th wrestling season will begin on Monday, November 30th, 2026. All 5th- 8th grade students who attend District 39 are eligible to participate in this no-cut sport. Athletes who join are not expected to have previous experience and will not be forced to wrestle a match unless they feel ready and confident in their ability.
Many benefits are associated with wrestling, including improved strength, agility, and self-confidence. Wrestling is an individual sport, but it also has a team component and instills teamwork and the importance of working together. Wrestling is one of the few sports in which a child's foot speed, ball-handling skills, hand-eye coordination, and size do not matter. Everyone is welcome, and wrestlers compete in their weight class or the weight class above.
Wrestlers compete by weight class. The weight classes are: 65lb, 70lb, 75lb, 80lb, 85lb, 90lb, 95lb, 100lb, 105lb, 112lb, 119lb, 126lb, 135lb, 145lb, 155lb, 167lb, 185lb, 215lb and 275lb. There is a weight class for everyone.
Practice is held at Highcrest Middle School in Gym A on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 3:45 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Fridays from 3:45 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. Dual meets are after school on Thursdays, and tournaments are held on Saturdays. Our calendar is at the bottom of the schedule page.
Each wrestler needs shorts, a T-shirt, headgear, and wrestling shoes. These items can be purchased at most sporting goods stores, and WJHS will provide competition gear.
