How long is the wrestling season?
The season starts Monday, we get back from Thanksgiving break, and the regular season concludes with regionals at the end of February. This is then followed by the IESA state tournament series, which ends the first or second weekend in March.
Who can join the wrestling team?
Any 5th through 8th grade student attending District 39.
When are tryouts?
There are no tryouts. Wrestling is a no-cut sport. Everyone makes the team.
What equipment do I need?
Wrestlers will need a pair of wrestling shoes, headgear, t-shirt and shorts for practice. The school will provide uniforms for all meets and tournaments. Wrestlers will also need a mouth guard if they have braces.
Will I have to wrestle wrestlers bigger than me?
No, you will only wrestle wrestlers in the same weight class as you. With parent permission, a wrestler may wrestle one weight class above their weight. The weight classes are as follows: 60lb, 65lb, 70lb, 75lb, 80lb, 85lb, 90lb, 95lb, 100lb, 105lb, 112lb, 119lb, 126lb, 135lb, 145lb, 155lb, 167lb, 185lb, 215lb, and 275lb.
When are practices?
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday from 4:00:-5:30 p.m. and Friday 4:00-5:15 in Gym A of Highcrest Middle School.
What if I can’t make all of the practices because of prior commitments?
Ideally, we would like you to attend every practice so that you can improve your skills as a wrestler. However, we will work with your schedule. 5th-6th grade students should attend three to four practices a week, and 7th-8th grade students should attend all four. Otherwise, you may not learn the necessary skills to be a competitive wrestler.
Does everyone get a chance to wrestle in the meets and/or tournaments?
For meets, we try to get everyone a match at the varsity or junior varsity level. However, not every team may have a match for us. For tournaments, we are usually allowed no more than two wrestlers per weight class. Some tournaments only allow one wrestler per tournament. Wrestle-offs take place at practice to determine who will wrestle in the meets and/or tournaments.
