Participation and Fee Requirements
We are excited to welcome and support athletes who are interested in participating in our programs. These are fun opportunities for our students to build connections at school and to be part of an active team after school hours. In order to participate, fee payments and all required documentation are required before a student athlete can participate. Please carefully review the information provided below regarding participation and fee requirements. All fees and required paperwork must be submitted in order for the athlete to participate.
For All Non-Cut Sports, such as cross country, track, wrestling, etc:
All student-athletes participating in non-cut sports must complete the required fee payments within 3 days of the first practice for the sport. All season start dates will be based on the athletics calendar. (Three practice days of grace will be provided for students signing up late, or in other extenuating circumstances). This means the fee is paid in full through Powerschool, and all forms and acceptable physicals are on file.
District 39 is proud to make financial assistance available for students in need. Requests for financial assistance or a fee waiver can be submitted via email to Margie Karabas (karabasm@wilmette39.org) at the district office, and must be initiated within the first 3 days of participation.
No student athlete can participate in a sport without these conditions being met. Athletes will not be able to participate in any competitive events unless these conditions are met.
Coaching staff for these sports are based on enrollment, therefore any student sign ups will be treated as full athletic participants in order to meet our conditions for adding coaching staff.
-------------
Fifth Grade: Fifth grade is an introduction to the District 39 Cross Country Program, participating as a team, and learning about distance running. All fifth graders are invited to participate at home meets. If there are fifth graders who qualify to participate at the regional or state level, they will be considered for participation.
Sixth Grade: Sixth graders participate in both home and away meets, and if there are sixth graders who qualify to participate at the regional or state level, they will be considered for participation.
PLEASE NOTE: HMS does NOT provide bus service to meets. Participants must arrange their own ride to and from meets.
Practice Information:
Practice will be held 3 times a week on the fields behind Highcrest. Our practices are on M, Tu and Th. Please check the calendar for the most up-to-date schedule. Practices run from 3:45pm - 4:45pm. The weekly practice schedule varies, based on holidays and meets that are scheduled for the week. The first practice for this season will be held on the Monday of the first FULL week of school for students. That will be Monday Aug 25th.
Students are encouraged to have a light snack before practice begins and to have their water bottles filled. Our practices will consist of distance training as well as endurance training on alternating days.
Our athletes have busy schedules, and we know that they may not be able to attend every practice, and every meet. We do ask, though, that every attempt is made for them to attend at least 2 of our weekly practices in order to benefit from the training and the team experience.
Purchasing CC Gear:
Parents are asked to please make sure your child has at least the top purchased for CC. Here is the link to the website.
Practice Pick-up:
Parents are asked to promptly pick students up on the north side "front" of HMS at 4:45pm each day of practice. In the interest of keeping our athletes (and their families) safe, we ask that you follow our request to pick-up on the north side "front" of HMS in the circle drive.
Information about Meets:
Most meets have courses that are about 1 mile. Some can be a little longer, but that depends on the school that is hosting. The order of events at the meet also depends on the hosting school. Some meets group grades together, while others run each grade and gender separately. On average, the younger grades run first and meets are about an hour long (depending on how many races there are and how quickly it is finished).
The Conference Meet:
The conference meet is open to all of our 6th grade runners. At conference, you compete against only your specific grade and gender. There are 6 races: 6th grade girls, 6th grade boys, 7th girls, 7th boys, 8th girls, 8th boys. Awards are given to the top three individuals and the top team at the end of the meet.
Transportation to away meets:
- All students will need to make arrangements for transportation to and from all of the meets.
- Please make sure to check-in with your coach before leaving the meet with a parent/guardian.
