Many students agree that music is an exciting pursuit; however, some might prefer to become more involved. From strings to brass and percussion, there is a wide range of instruments to explore and choose from. Once you’ve found the right one and enjoy it, you may wonder how to get started.
One way is through teachers who provide lessons on your instrument of choice. Besides teaching you the instrument itself, teachers can help you grasp the fundamentals of music, such as basic theory, rhythms, and note reading. When getting started, it’s important to choose the right teacher for your learning style or someone who just “matches your vibe.”. This article introduces ways to find your dream teacher who can help you excel on your instrument, whether you’re starting as a beginner or looking to take your playing to the next level.
The first step is to ask around, especially those who are already well-versed in music. A few ideas include school music teachers, community music schools, owners of music shops, or friends who have private teachers and participate in music. Finding a reputable music teacher is easy if you know who to ask! For example, when finding my teacher, I was able to take temporary lessons through the Summer Music Program (facilitated by the Williamsville Music Boosters) and really enjoyed my teacher’s style and approach to teaching. I then reached out to them after these lessons concluded, asking if I could become their student, and they agreed. In this way, I was able to improve my technique and skill in just a few weeks because of the individualized attention and feedback they provided. Private teachers are incredibly helpful; where would I be without them?
Finding a teacher is not the end of the process, however. To have a successful learning experience, you must ensure you’re the right match. Some ways to do this include asking about pricing options, lesson availability, or trying a trial lesson. The goal of a trial lesson is to get acquainted with your teacher’s style of instruction to ensure they’re the right fit. Also, be sure to understand your teacher’s expectations and credentials. Do they require a certain amount of time spent on topics they believe are important? How long do they expect you to practice? While these factors may seem complicated, they are vital to having a good learning experience and enjoying your instrument. And after all that’s said and done, if you still aren’t satisfied with your lessons, don’t hesitate to look for someone else. It might take time, but it’s worth finding the right teacher who will help you improve at your own pace. By taking the time to find someone who meets your needs, you set yourself up for a lifetime of enjoyment in music.
